Chapter 9: The First Strike

505 Words
Night draped over the city like a suffocating blanket. The mansion stood illuminated, but Ava knew light could not keep the shadows away. Lorenzo stood in the security room, eyes scanning every camera feed. Marco and Enzo flanked him, tense and alert. Every shadow, every slight movement, was tracked. “Boss,” Marco whispered, “someone is moving near the east wall. Two men. Amateur, but bold.” Lorenzo did not flinch. “Signal the guards. Intercept quietly. No mistakes.” Ava stood behind him, heart racing. “They’re coming for me?” “Yes,” Lorenzo said, voice calm but sharp. “Someone wants to see if you’re worth the trouble. Remember, these are not ordinary men—they are precise, trained, and relentless. Whoever sent them is smart. Dangerous.” Ava’s pulse quickened. Fear rose, but beneath it, a spark of awareness—she was no longer the child hiding in a burning house. She was learning. She was observing. “Boss,” Gianni said quietly, appearing at the stairwell, “courier files intercepted near the docks. He spoke before he died. He said the girl was never meant to vanish.” Ava’s stomach tightened. “They know I’m here. More are coming.” “Yes,” Lorenzo replied. “And tonight will test every defense we have. They want you alive, but alive does not mean safe.” From the east wing, shadows moved. Guards sprang into position. In an instant, the intruders were neutralized—no screams, no time to react. Ava flinched at the efficiency. “They are amateurs,” Lorenzo said, “but they are learning from mistakes. Whoever sent them is watching. They are gauging our strength.” Then the faint vibration of the floor alerted them to someone moving deeper inside the mansion. “Not the amateurs,” Marco whispered. “Someone knows the layout. Professional.” Ava felt her blood run cold. This was different. Precise. Calculated. Lorenzo stepped close. “Stay close. Watch. Learn. Your life depends on it tonight.” She nodded, understanding for the first time that survival was not about waiting to be saved—it was about action, observation, and courage. Minutes later, reports came in: more intruders at the perimeter. Guards eliminated them silently, but the patterns were clear—someone was testing every entry, every weak point. “They’re not just attacking,” Lorenzo said quietly. “They’re mapping us. Whoever is behind this wants a guarantee that you will survive—or be found.” Ava’s chest tightened. “Who?” Lorenzo’s eyes darkened. “Someone from the past. Someone who lost because of you.” She looked at him, confusion and fear mixing with resolve. “Then they want me alive… or dead.” “Yes,” he said. “And you must be ready for both. Tonight, you are no longer just surviving. You are being hunted. And you are beginning to fight back.” Outside, the city slept unaware. Inside, the war had quietly begun.
