Whispers of a Crush

952 Words
They say college is where you find yourself, where you make memories that last a lifetime. For me, it had quickly become all that and more. My friends and I felt like we were on top of the world—laughing at inside jokes, going on spontaneous adventures, and finding comfort in each other’s presence. It wasn’t just about classes and textbooks anymore; it was a whole life we were building together. In this small city that had become my world, my friends were my constant. Mia was always my anchor, effortlessly brave and outspoken, the friend who pulled me out of my comfort zone, and Sara, with her quiet strength and unwavering warmth, was like the calm after a storm. Then there was Tyler—the easygoing guy with that crooked smile and messy curls, always with a guitar slung over his shoulder. He had a voice like velvet, one that could turn even the simplest song into something I felt in my chest. It was silly, really, but I couldn’t deny it. I’d developed a small crush on him. Not the kind that takes over everything, but just a little spark, something I kept to myself. It was safe that way. Tyler was my friend, and I didn’t want to risk what we had. So, I kept it buried, wrapped up in layers of friendship, tucked away in the corners of my heart. --- One evening, we were all sitting in the campus café. Tyler was strumming his guitar absentmindedly, tuning it as Sara sketched in her notebook, Mia sprawled next to her with her feet propped up on a chair. "Venice," Tyler called, flashing me that casual smile. "Any song requests?" I could feel my cheeks warm slightly, hoping the dim café lighting hid it. "Hmm… how about something from the ‘90s?" He laughed, his eyes crinkling in that way I’d noticed and tried to forget. "Alright, a throwback. I can do that." As he started playing, Mia leaned in closer to me, a smirk on her face. "I see you watching him, you know," she whispered with a teasing grin. My heart skipped, but I tried to keep my cool. "What are you talking about?" I replied, attempting to laugh it off. "Oh, come on," she nudged me. "It’s written all over your face. I think it’s cute." I rolled my eyes, trying to brush it off. "You’re imagining things. Tyler and I are just friends." "Sure, keep telling yourself that," Mia chuckled, her voice dropping as Tyler’s voice filled the café with a slow, haunting melody. I glanced at him, and for a brief moment, our eyes met. He gave me a small, knowing smile, and I quickly looked away, my heart pounding. --- The days turned into weeks, and soon, our little group became inseparable. We’d study together, eat together, and explore every hidden corner of the city. Sometimes, it felt like we were the only people in the world, and that was okay with me. We had found our own little universe, complete with laughter, late-night talks, and dreams we shared when the world seemed too big. One weekend, we decided to go on a hiking trip. It was Mia’s idea—she always had the craziest plans. "It’ll be an adventure!" she had insisted, practically dragging me out of bed at sunrise. Halfway up the trail, Tyler slowed down to walk beside me. "You doing okay?" he asked, his voice softer than usual. "Yeah," I replied, slightly out of breath. "I didn’t expect this to be so... steep." He laughed, his eyes glancing at the trail ahead. "Mia’s wild. But we’ll make it. Just keep your eyes on the view." He pointed to the way the morning sun was breaking over the hills, casting everything in shades of gold. It was a small moment, but something about it felt significant. Standing next to him, watching the sunrise, I felt that familiar pang of something I couldn’t express. But instead of saying anything, I kept my thoughts to myself, letting the moment be just that—a beautiful, fleeting second I could hold onto. --- Later that evening, as we gathered around a small bonfire, I found myself sitting next to him again. The others were talking and laughing, their voices mingling with the crackling of the fire, but my mind was somewhere else. Tyler was telling a story, his voice animated, his laughter infectious. I watched him, memorizing every detail—the way his eyes sparkled in the firelight, the way he’d glance my way every now and then, as if he knew I was listening. "Venice?" Tyler’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. "You okay? You seem... distracted." "Oh! No, I’m good," I stammered, feeling flustered. "Just... thinking." "About what?" he asked, his gaze steady, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "Life, I guess," I replied vaguely, not daring to meet his eyes. He chuckled. "A philosopher, huh? I like that." I laughed, shrugging it off, and he leaned back, his gaze shifting to the stars. "Well, you’re not alone in that. I think we’re all just figuring it out." In that moment, it felt like he understood—maybe not everything, but enough. And for now, that was enough for me. --- As the semester continued, I learned to live with the small crush I harbored for Tyler. It was something I kept tucked away, a quiet admiration, a hidden fondness that added a little extra light to my days. And even though he never knew, that small spark of a crush was my secret, my little treasure, something that made our time together just a bit more special. ---
