Shade didn't blink. Didn't breathe right. He kept his body still, but everything about him screamed forward motion. His grip on control thinned by the second. Nick knew it. I could see it in the way he refused to look him in the eye.
"I'm telling you the truth," Nick muttered. "I didn't know. I didn't plan any of this. You think I wouldn't have said something sooner if I had?"
"You wouldn't have said a damn thing if I hadn't caught you in here," Shade snapped. "You'd still be playing the silent victim. Sitting beside her like you earned the right."
"She's in there." Nick shifted forward again. "I feel it. She's not just a shell. You feel it too, don't you?"
