Something skidded across the roof. It hit the concrete hard, then rolled to a stop near the edge. Shade was on his feet before I could blink. Shade crossed the rooftop fast, each step sharp with tension. I kept low behind the wall, scanning the shadows while I waited. The edge of my vest tightened across my ribs, uncomfortable where I hadn't fastened it right. His shoulders locked. Then he reached down, picked it up, and turned it over in his hands. He held it out so I could see it. It was a power cord. Heavy-duty. The kind used on construction sites, thick with a bank of outlets along its side and a yellow reinforced plug on the end. A portable surge protector. A man stepped out into the dark as Shade was looking at it. Before I could blink, Shade slammed him into the concrete wall.
