THE FROZEN TRIAL 🧊

1305 Words
The desert warmth faded into memory. Days after leaving the Solara Expanse, the world began to change once again. The air grew thinner. Colder. Sharper. Kael pulled his cloak tighter as frost began forming along the edges of the path. “I miss the heat already,” he muttered. Kade scoffed. “You were complaining the whole time.” “Yeah,” Kael said, shivering, “but at least I wasn’t freezing to death.” Zephyra walked ahead, her steps light despite the growing wind. “You’ll survive,” she said. “Probably.” Kael frowned. “That ‘probably’ doesn’t help.” Lyra paused, her glowing eyes scanning the snowy horizon. “We’re close,” she said. Sylvara stepped beside her. “The energy?” Lyra nodded. “Stronger than before.” Mira hugged her arms, breath visible in the cold air. “It feels… quiet.” Sylvara’s expression grew serious. “Too quiet.” The Frostveil Mountains By nightfall, they reached the base of the Frostveil Mountains. Towering peaks of ice and stone pierced the sky, hidden behind constant blizzards. The wind howled endlessly, carrying snow like blades through the air. Kade looked up. “This place doesn’t look welcoming.” Zephyra smirked. “It’s not.” Kael sighed. “Great. That’s becoming a pattern.” As they began their ascent, the cold became unbearable. Even Kael’s connection to the earth felt distant—like the land itself was asleep beneath the ice. Mira stumbled slightly. “This place… it drains you.” Sylvara nodded. “The cold here is not natural.” Lyra’s voice was quiet. “It’s controlled.” The Storm That Watches Halfway up the mountain, the storm intensified. The wind roared louder, visibility dropping to almost nothing. Kael could barely see the others. “Stay close!” he shouted. Suddenly— The ground beneath them shifted. Ice cracked. Kael lost his footing. “Kae—!” Mira started— But Kael slipped, sliding down a steep icy slope. He slammed into a ridge below, barely managing to grab onto a frozen edge. “Not again…” he groaned. Above him, the others rushed down carefully. Kade grabbed his arm and pulled him up. “You good?” Kael nodded, breathing hard. “Yeah… I think the mountain just doesn’t like me.” Lyra looked around, her eyes glowing faintly. “No,” she said. “It’s not the mountain.” The wind suddenly stopped. Completely. Silence fell. Then— A voice echoed through the storm. Cold. Calm. Watching. “You should not be here.” The Strategist Appears The snow parted. And from the storm emerged a figure. A woman. Her long icy-blue hair flowed like frozen silk, and frost formed beneath every step she took. Her eyes were sharp. Calculating. Glacira. The Dragon of Ice. Kael swallowed. “…Another dragon.” Zephyra leaned over slightly. “Told you we had more.” Glacira’s gaze moved across the group. She said nothing at first. Just… observed. Then— “You are unprepared,” she said. Kade stepped forward. “We’ve handled worse.” Glacira looked at him. “Have you?” Her voice was not mocking. Just… certain. “The storm has already begun testing you.” Lyra narrowed her eyes. “This storm… it’s yours.” Glacira nodded. “Yes.” Kael frowned. “So you’re the one freezing us to death?” Glacira ignored him. “This place is not for the weak.” Sylvara stepped forward. “They are not weak.” Glacira’s gaze shifted to her. “That remains to be proven.” The Trial Begins The wind roared again—stronger than before. Ice erupted from the ground, forming barriers that separated the group. “Hey—!” Kael shouted. But it was too late. They were divided. Kael found himself alone. Surrounded by nothing but snow and silence. “Okay…” he muttered. “This again.” Kael’s Trial: Endurance The cold hit him instantly. Harder than before. His hands began to shake. His breath slowed. “Move…” he whispered to himself. But his body resisted. The ground beneath him felt distant. His connection… fading. “No…” He clenched his fists. “I’m not stopping here…” He forced himself forward. Step by step. Fighting the cold. Fighting himself. Lyra’s Trial: Truth Elsewhere— Lyra stood inside a frozen chamber. Symbols covered the walls. But they shifted constantly. Changing. Rewriting themselves. “An illusion…” she whispered. Voices echoed around her. Lies. Doubts. “You’re not strong enough…” “You don’t belong here…” Lyra closed her eyes. “No,” she said. She focused. Not on what she heard— But on what she knew. The symbols stabilized. The illusion shattered. Kade’s Trial: Control Kade stood in a storm of ice. His flames burned—but wildly. Out of control. The more he fought, the more unstable they became. Glacira’s voice echoed. “Strength without control is destruction.” Kade gritted his teeth. “I don’t need control—I need power!” His flames exploded— And nearly consumed him. He dropped to one knee. Breathing hard. “…No…” He steadied himself. Focused. The flames calmed. Controlled. Balanced. Mira’s Trial: Sacrifice Mira found herself beside a frozen lake. Beneath the ice— Figures. Trapped. Fading. She reached out instinctively. “I can’t leave them…” Her hands touched the ice. Pain surged through her. But she didn’t stop. “I won’t…” The ice cracked. Water flowed. Life returned. The Final Test The storm vanished. The group stood together again. Exhausted. Changed. Glacira stood before them. Silent. Observing. Then— She nodded. “You have passed.” Kael dropped to the ground. “Finally…” The Chosen One The ground beneath them opened. Revealing an ancient frozen chamber. At its center— The fragment. Glowing. But Glacira did not move toward it. Instead— She turned to Lyra. “You see what others cannot.” Lyra blinked. “…What?” “You understand patterns,” Glacira said. “You see truth beyond illusion.” She extended her hand. “Will you accept greater responsibility?” Lyra hesitated. “I’m already bonded to Luminar…” Glacira nodded. “Yes.” “This will not replace it.” “It will strengthen you.” Kael raised an eyebrow. “Wait—you can have TWO dragons?!” Zephyra smirked. “Looks like it.” Lyra looked at Glacira. “…What happens if I accept?” Glacira’s voice was calm. “You will see the world not just as it is…” “…but as it will be.” Lyra took her hand. The Ice Awakens A surge of icy energy filled the chamber. Snow and light swirled together. Lyra gasped as new visions flooded her mind. Strategies. Paths. Outcomes. She fell to one knee. Kael rushed forward. “Hey—are you okay?!” Lyra looked up. Her eyes now held both light… And frost. “…Yeah,” she said softly. “I just see… more now.” The Next Warning As they claimed the fragment, Glacira spoke one final time. “You are growing stronger.” Her gaze hardened. “But so is he.” Sylvara stepped forward. “We know.” Glacira shook her head slightly. “No.” “You do not.” The wind howled again. “The balance is not the only thing breaking.” Lyra frowned. “What do you mean?” Glacira’s voice dropped. “Something older than dragons is awakening.” Kael exchanged a look with the others. “That doesn’t sound good.” Glacira turned away. “It is not.” Far in Darkness Deep beneath the earth… Something moved. Ancient. Massive. Watching. Waiting. 🔥 To be continued…
