Chapter: a piece of cake
Susan’s hands trembled against the steering wheel, her heart racing as she navigated the chaotic streets. The familiar hum of the city was gone, replaced by panic and disarray. She could hardly believe that just hours ago, life had felt almost normal.
“Don, this is going to be the best wedding cake ever!” Susan had exclaimed earlier that day, excitement bubbling within her as they entered the quaint bakery tucked between two towering buildings. The aroma of fresh pastries wafted through the air, tantalizing and sweet.
“Or a complete disaster! I can’t believe we’re actually doing this,” Don chuckled, a grin spreading wide across his face. He always had a knack for lightening the mood, an infectious optimism that made her feel everything would work out—until that day, at least.
As the baker presented an array of tiers draped in delicate frosting, Susan felt a thrill of anticipation. They sampled flavors, their laughter echoing through the shop amidst the clink of cake servers and plates. When they finally settled on a lemon-vanilla creation, Don lifted a dazzling slice adorned with lush frosting to his mouth.
“Just one more bite for luck!” he teased, his mischievous grin sending a wave of excitement through her. But then came the unexpected.
“Wait, Don, look—!” she started, but there was no time. The moment he swallowed the delectable bite, a strange gurgle rumbled , and without warning, it felt as though the cake had literally exploded in their faces. Creamy frosting burst forth like a sugar grenade, a cloud of sugary chaos enveloping them.
“What the—?” Don exclaimed, laughter spilling out as the gooey frosting smeared across his face. Susan erupted into giggles, the surreal hilarity of the moment washing their worries away.
“Babe, you look ridiculous!” Susan laughed. Don swipe a finger through the mess on his cheek and playfully tasted the cream, relishing the sweetness amid the chaos.
But then, as the giggles faded, Don’s expression shifted. He clutched his stomach, the laughter replaced by concern. The moment of levity had turned sour, his playful demeanor collapsing under the weight of a painful gurgle.
“Ugh, Susan… something’s not right.” His eyes widened, panic flickering like a candle’s flame dancing in the wind.
“What do you mean?” She could feel the knot tighten in her own stomach, a premonition clawing at her insides.
“It hurts. It feels like…” His voice trailed off, the color draining from his face.
As the world outside turned from a slice of cake bliss to a crescendo of chaos, Susan’s heart sank. “We need to get you to a hospital…” she whispered, fear tingeing her voice as she helped him to his feet, steadying him against the bakery counter.
The streets had morphed into a cacophony of noise and panic. Car alarms blared, people milled about with frantic eyes, and flashes of police lights glinted in the distance as they raced towards the hospital.
Once inside the car, Susan’s mind whirled back to her brother, Max. “ You need to find him, your brother works down the street from here,” he urged, Susan glancing nervously at Don curled up in a ball of pain. “Yeah, Max will know what to do.” She reassures herself.
“Just drive, Susan. If you can, try to get me to the hospital,” Don breathed, grimacing as another wave of pain squeezed through him. He leaned back in the seat, his face pale against the backdrop of panic raging outside.
With each turn of the wheel, Susan felt terror wrap around her, but determination surged alongside it. “Then after, when I find Max, we will come back to you. I promise! Your stomach will be pumped! You’re going through a lot to cut those carbs from your daily intake!” she whispered as she maneuvered through the chaos.
“I just want you to be safe,” he murmured, clutching his stomach. Though he tried to put on a brave front, his voice betrayed his alarm.
As they weaved through wreckage and shadows, Susan’s fingers clutched tightly among the steering wheel. She fought to stay focused, but the weight of fear brewed in the atmosphere thickening around them.
“Don—please, hang in there! It’s going to be okay,” she encouraged, blinking back tears that threatened to spill as she chased the daunting vision of her brother navigating the same chaos.
Eventually, as they reached the entrance of the hospital, a wave of relief washed over her. She parked swiftly, her heart hammering in her chest as she turned to face Don, who was already seeing the nurses rushing outside.
“Go!” he urged, a nod towards the entrance. “Find Max. I’ll be fine. Just… please hurry.”
His plea ignited a torrent of anxiety and urgency inside her, and in a flash, she dashed through the chaos, propelled by resolve.
“Stay safe, Don, we’ll be right back!” she called back over her shoulder, fear urging her legs to move faster as she pushed through the crowded waiting room, searching for the familiar faces of her brother and his coworkers.
In the midst of the madness, Susan’s heart raced with panic tinged with hope—the road ahead was uncertain, but she was determined to find the brother who would guide her through the chaos that had shattered their lives. She found someone trying to get into her car and had to kick her in the back of her kneecaps to throw her off balance. I’m sorry she squeaked, and Susan hopped in her car and peeled off to where she could only hope where Max would still be. “Yeah this will be easy, a piece of cake...”
