Chapter Fifty-Five The next two days passed like a slow, agonizing blur. The brilliant sunshine that had welcomed the men back from the north quickly faded away, replaced by a thick, heavy gray fog that rolled over the compound walls and settled into every corner of the yard. It felt like the weather was mocking me, matching the suffocating darkness that had taken up permanent residence in my chest. I barely left the bedroom. The heavy metal door stayed locked from the inside, a barrier between me and the world that had become entirely hostile.
