Chapter Twenty The morning brought no relief from the heavy, freezing silence that had settled over the room. When the first pale rays of gray light filtered through the curtains, I was already awake, sitting on the edge of the stiff leather sofa with my knees pulled tightly to my chest. My body ached from sleeping on the narrow cushions, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the hollow, heavy pain in my chest. Across the room, the massive bed was empty. Jake was already up, standing by the window with his back to me. He was fully dressed in his dark t-shirt and jeans, his heavy leather vest resting on the desk beside his keys. He didn't turn around when he heard the blanket rustle. He just stood there, looking out at the foggy courtyard, his massive frame completely still
