Chapter Thirty-Two The air grew significantly colder as we left the main clubhouse behind, walking past the dark, silent shape of the garage toward the overgrown edge of the East perimeter. The wind hissed through the high chain-link fence, and the mud squelched beneath my sneakers. I kept my hands shoved deep into the pockets of my denim jacket, my eyes tracking Amber’s silhouette just a few paces ahead of me. Part of me—the sensible, cautious part that had kept me alive this long—was screaming at me to turn back. But another part, the part that was tired of being the fragile civilian princess hidden in a locked bedroom, pushed me forward. I wanted to be strong enough for Jake.
