12In early April of 1941 there was still snow on the ground when Greek soldiers began streaming through Metsovo on their way home. Many of them had even thrown off their arms, too weak to carry them. They were hungry and tired. Many had died along the way. Papa Yiorgos and the other priests collected and stored the discarded arms in the ceilings of some of the smaller churches in the village. There was no hope of resistance. The Greek army was weakened and exhausted from the campaign to push the Italians further into Albania and was certainly no match for the Nazis, who had just invaded from Bulgaria.
