When he landed the New York, the first person who called him was his driver, telling him that his car had been moved out of the beachside.
“Thanks a lot. I will see you when I return.” He said hanging up to answer his father’s call.
“Hello, Dad” he said as if the call was a big disturbance
“Son, after your arrival, we will start making arrangements for your wedding plans,” his bright voice said almost immediately.
“Look Dad I have a lot to do with my life right now. I have told you a million times that I will get married when I want to,” he said already getting upset.
“When is your when Johnson?”
“Excuse me, Dad I have to attend to something right now, I’ll call you back.” he hung up with a big sigh.
She walked gently behind him taking note of his every move. He looked dirty and unkempt, his dreadlocks were natural and short; his lips were dry and black as if they would tear from the dryness that suffered it. Maybe he had not taken his bath for some days because he stank badly. She followed behind throwing her face left and right trying to dodge the cruel smell that spread from his body through the air. Wave walked like no one was following behind, Olivia ran after his steps so that she wouldn't get lost or miss her way, all these did not bother her all she needed was a roof over her head and food.
“So do you mean you have been sleeping outside all these while?” he asked after realizing that someone was following behind.
“Yes,” she replied feeling uncomfortable with the many scars on his face. After the long walk he brought her to his mushroom house. It looked like those ones she’s seen in the slums. The roof was old and worn out, a long crack ran from the rooftop to the middle, the environment was dirty and some women sold things like snacks and cooked food in the street. He ushered her into a small room that could barely contain three adults, a flat foam lay on the floor, and a plastic chair. The air in the room was permeated with the smell of cocaine and fading voices disturbed the peace of the building from downstairs. She was engrossed in numerous thoughts running through her mind, foreseeing the stifling heat at night and anticipating that the stench from the room would be worse than that of a decaying rabbit carcass.
“ let me get something for you to eat, I will be back.” he said not minding if she heard or not. In a short time, he came in with a plait of rice over with another plastic plait and a rubber spoon. He drew out a small plastic rubber from underneath a small bench and brought out one sachet of water stretching it to her.
“Thank you!” she said not minding if he looked at her, she rushed the food with her bare hands like a prisoner.
Loveth also booked her plane and her flight was taking off that morning. Johnson’s father already gave her a detailed address of where he stayed in New York. As she arrived in New York, she boarded a Taxi to where he stayed. He was surprised to see her knocking on his door,
“How did she know I was here?” he thought as he opened the door to receive her.
“Thank you, my love,” she said trying to stamp a peck on his cheek as usual but he moved away.
“My father told you I was here right?” he asked feeling angry with what was happening.
“Yes he did and what is wrong with that?” she asked glaring straight into his face. He slapped the door behind her and headed for the chair as she rushed to sit beside him.
“Sweetie, are you not happy to see me?”
“Do I look like I am not?” he asked in return
“Then if you are happy to see me, give me a kiss,”
“I’m not in for all that right now, please. How long do you plan on staying?” her face contorted with anger.
“You are sending me away because of that forlorn?” her words enraged him that he yelled at her.
“Never you call her a forlorn again!”
“Now I see where this whole thing is coming from,” she said already getting enraged. “It’s best for you to make your choice now, it’s either me or myself!” the heated argument got out of hand when Johnson excused her for the restroom.
“If it is not me, then it’s no one else. Can’t you see that I am in love with you? Can’t you see that we love each other regardless of what has happened? I love you, Johnson,” she said in some crocodile tears.
As days passed by, she got used to the house and its environs; most times Wave would come in with some of his thug friends who smoked cocaine. They admired Oliver and would ask Wave who she was, he would tell them she was his sister. Wave was comfortable having her at home, though he was a thug but he cared for her and genuinely helped her. He knew she had no help and he was not ready to take advantage of that. Olivia soon became friends with the woman who sells cooks on the street, she took her as her mother, and she already told her how she got into the hands of Wave and how nice he has been to her.
“Why did you leave without a note or something,”
“I never wanted to, we really weren’t meant for each other. I just wanted him to be happy with his girlfriend. They have known themselves before I came into the picture,” she said with a small voice.
“Then you should give him a call.”
“My phone already fell into the flowing stream after the deserted place,” she said feeling sad. The woman felt sorry for her.
