Chapter 5 – The Wolves Within

1104 Words
The night felt different. The Silverwood Forest, usually calm, hummed with energy as if the trees themselves knew something sacred was about to unfold. The crescent moon hung heavy in the sky, spilling silver across the clearing where the Alpha family and the highest-ranking wolves of the Crescent Moon Pack gathered. I stood at my mother’s side, my heart drumming against my ribs. My palms were damp, though I tried to steady them at my sides. This was the moment I had dreamed of and feared in equal measure: the first time I would meet the wolves who guided our leaders, the beasts and souls intertwined with their human halves. “Tonight,” Mother’s voice rose, warm yet firm, commanding attention without effort, “you will witness the spirits who guard and guide us. This is a sacred bond, a reminder of who we are, and what we stand for.” Her words sank into me like an oath. Around me, Luis shifted from foot to foot, his excitement plain despite his attempt at seriousness. His father, Marcus, the Beta, stood tall and unwavering, one arm resting lightly on Maren’s shoulder. Maren, our Head Omega, radiated a steady calm, her presence always soft yet grounding, the quiet strength beneath the pack’s daily life. Rowan, our Gamma, leaned with an easy confidence, while Kael, our Delta, stood sharp-eyed and alert, as though nothing could slip past his notice. But tonight, their eyes carried a glimmer of something more, anticipation, reverence. Mother stepped forward first. I felt the shift in the air before her body began to change, bones reshaping, fur pushing through skin, her form bending and stretching until standing before us was not my mother, Alpha Elaine, but Nymera, her wolf. Nymera was breathtaking. Her fur was silver so pure it seemed spun from moonlight itself, rippling like liquid light every time she moved. Her eyes, the same deep green as Mother’s, burned brighter in wolf form, filled with wisdom, authority, and a promise of unyielding protection. She stepped closer, and even without words, I felt her power press against my chest, not crushing but steady, reassuring. I swallowed hard, awe filling every part of me. So, this is what it means to be Alpha-born. Luis let out a quiet gasp, his hand brushing against mine in a way that said, are you seeing this? Before I could answer, Marcus stepped forward. His shift was faster, practiced, as though his wolf had been waiting impatiently to show himself. His wolf, Orion, was a towering beast of deep charcoal fur streaked with faint silver. His presence was different from Nymera’s, less radiant, more solid, like the weight of a mountain at your back. His golden eyes gleamed, protective, and fierce, the kind of wolf who would never hesitate to throw himself between danger and his pack. Orion padded to Nymera’s side, and even without words, their bond was obvious, Alpha and Beta, perfectly in sync, a shield, and a sword. Maren followed next. I had never seen her shift before, but when she did, my breath caught. Her wolf, Selene, was smaller than Nymera or Orion, but no less striking. Her fur was white as fresh snow, speckled with faint grey along her muzzle and paws, and her eyes, soft, steady hazel, were filled with quiet grace. Where Nymera radiated command and Orion radiated strength, Selene radiated comfort. She felt like home, like the warmth of a fire after a storm. Luis smiled, pride lighting his face at the sight of his mother’s wolf. Selene brushed lightly against Orion, her mate, before settling beside him with an elegance that made me realize just how much the Head Omega carried, unseen but never absent. Rowan’s shift was next. The Gamma grinned at me before his bones cracked and fur burst forth. Fenrir, his wolf, was a russet-coloured giant, his frame broader than even Orion’s, though his aura was wilder, like fire harnessed but never tamed. His eyes were a piercing amber, playful yet sharp, and when he let out a low growl that almost sounded like a chuckle, I realized Fenrir was as mischievous as Rowan himself. Finally, Kael, the Delta, stepped forward. He said nothing, as usual, but his wolf did all the speaking. Dusk emerged from his skin, his fur a sleek black that shimmered with faint hints of midnight blue when it caught the moonlight. His presence was different from the others, silent, shadowed, yet powerful. His ice-blue eyes scanned the clearing like a sentry, calculating, patient, and utterly ruthless if challenged. I shivered. Dusk was terrifying in his stillness, but also mesmerizing. When the five wolves stood together, the clearing vibrated with energy. Nymera gleamed at the centre, Orion unshakable at her flank, Selene glowing like a quiet flame, Fenrir wild and untamed, Dusk sharp as a blade. Together, they were more than leaders, they were living embodiments of the Crescent Moon Pack’s heart. For a moment, I forgot to breathe. “This,” Mother’s voice slipped into my mind, not spoken aloud, but carried on the strange magic of her wolf’s bond, “is what you are destined to inherit, Skye.” Her words filled me with pride but also fear. Was I really meant to walk this path? To hold this kind of power? Beside me, Luis whispered under his breath, “One day, that will be us.” I turned to him, my heart skipping. His eyes were fixed on Orion and Selene, glowing with determination. He wasn’t wrong. In two years, we would meet our wolves. In two years, our lives would change forever. The wolves circled once, each lowering their heads to us in acknowledgment before shifting back into human form, clothes neatly carried by the magic of the change. They stood proud, a little breathless, but glowing with the bond of what they had just shared. Mother placed a hand on my shoulder. “You’ve seen them now. The bond between human and wolf is sacred. They are us, and we are them. When the time comes, Skye, you will not only meet your wolf, but you will also meet the other half of your soul.” Her words sank into me like stone into water, sending ripples through everything I thought I knew. I looked at the clearing where moments ago five magnificent wolves had stood, and for the first time, I understood the weight of what it meant to be born into this pack. The future no longer felt far away. It felt like it was already reaching for me.
