Chapter Four – The Brother Rule

758 Words
Sometimes I wondered if my brother had a sixth sense, like some weird internal radar that started blaring whenever Ethan and I stood too close to each other. Because that was the only explanation for what happened the morning after the pool party. The Warning I was in the kitchen pouring cereal when I heard voices from the garage. Jake’s laugh first, then Ethan’s lower tone. I leaned closer, spoon suspended midair. “…I’m serious, man,” Jake was saying. “She’s off-limits.” My stomach dropped. Ethan’s voice followed, hesitant. “Jake.” “I mean it,” Jake’s tone sharpened. “You’re my best friend. She’s my little sister. End of discussion.” I froze. Milk sloshed over the edge of the bowl, forgotten. Off-limits. Like I was a library book Jake had checked out and slapped a “Do Not Touch” sticker on it. Like I wasn’t my own person at all. I backed away from the door before either of them noticed me. My appetite vanished, replaced with a knot in my throat. Invisible Again All day, I carried the words like a weight on my chest. At lunch, I pushed food around my plate. At dinner, I barely spoke. Jake didn’t notice he was too busy ranting about basketball practice. But Ethan noticed. Every time I glanced up, his eyes flicked to mine, questioning. I avoided them, pretending to study the salt shaker like it held the answers to life. Later, when Jake disappeared into the living room for video games, I slipped out onto the back porch with my journal. Fireflies blinked in the dusk, and the air smelled like cut grass. I’m not invisible, I wrote furiously. I’m not just “Jake’s little sister.” I’m me. Why can’t anyone see that? The words blurred as my eyes stung. I slammed the journal shut, hugging it to my chest. “Lila?” I jumped, nearly dropping the book. Ethan stood in the doorway, hands in his hoodie pockets, expression cautious. “Can I sit?” he asked. I shrugged, not trusting my voice. He lowered himself onto the step beside me, close enough that our shoulders almost brushed. The Conversation For a moment, silence stretched between us, filled only by the chirp of crickets. “You heard him, didn’t you?” Ethan asked finally, his voice low. I swallowed hard. “He made it pretty clear.” Ethan exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “Jake’s…protective. Sometimes too much.” “Protective?” I laughed bitterly. “More like controlling. Like I’m some object he owns.” “You’re not,” Ethan said quickly. His eyes met mine, steady and serious. “You’re not invisible, Lila. I see you.” The words hit me harder than I expected. My chest tightened, warmth flooding through me. “You don’t mean that,” I whispered. “I do.” His gaze didn’t waver. “You’re funny. You’re smart. You’re…different now.” “Different how?” He hesitated, as if searching for the right words. “You’re not a kid anymore.” The world seemed to tilt. My pulse roared in my ears. The Almost Moment We sat there, the night air wrapping around us. His hand rested on the step between us, so close I could feel the heat radiating from it. My fingers twitched, wanting to close the gap. Ethan leaned slightly toward me, his voice barely above a whisper. “Sometimes I think Jake forgets that.” I couldn’t breathe. “And you?” His eyes darkened, unreadable. “I could never forget.” My heart slammed against my ribs. The space between us felt electric, charged. If I moved just a little closer… But then the screen door creaked, and Jake’s voice called, “Ethan! Are you coming or what?” Ethan jerked back, clearing his throat. “Yeah, be right there!” The moment shattered. Again. He stood, giving me a look I couldn’t decipher, then disappeared inside. Late-Night Journaling I sat frozen on the step, staring at the fireflies blinking in the dark like nothing had happened. But something had. I opened my journal and scribbled with shaking hands: He said he sees me. He looked at me like he meant it. It was almost again. Always almost. I pressed the pen so hard it nearly ripped the page. But beneath the frustration was something else—hope. Because maybe, just maybe, “almost” was getting closer every day ✨ End of Chapter Four ✨
