A Chance Encounter

Chapter One The sweet scent of fresh roses drifted through the tiny flower shop as Lena Hart carefully wrapped a bouquet of pink lilies in ivory paper. "Thank you, dear," an elderly customer said warmly as she accepted the flowers. Lena smiled. "You're welcome, have a wonderful evening." The bell above the door rang as the woman left, and silence settled over the shop once again. Lena glanced at the old wall clock. At 7:15 p.m, another long day had come to an end. She walked to the cash register and counted the day's earnings, her smile slowly faded. It wasn't enough, not even close. With a weary sigh, she tucked the money into the register and looked around Hart's Blossoms, the little flower shop her late mother had built with love. Every corner of the shop held memories: the wooden shelves her father had crafted before he passed away, the faded photographs hanging behind the counter, and the small radio that always played soft jazz music. Closing the shop wasn't an option, it was all she had left. After locking the register, Lena watered the remaining flowers before switching off the lights. Outside, the evening sky was painted with heavy gray clouds, a cool breeze swept through the streets as she pulled her jacket tighter around herself. "Looks like it's going to rain," she murmured. Instead of heading straight home, she stopped at a small bakery a few blocks away. "One loaf of bread, please," she told the cashier. The young man behind the counter handed it to her with a smile. "That's all?" She nodded. "For today." Bread was all she could afford until the weekend. As she stepped back outside, her phone vibrated, it was her best friend, Maya. "Lena!" Maya exclaimed the moment she answered, "Please tell me you've agreed to come to my birthday dinner tomorrow." Lena laughed softly, "I haven't." "You work too much." "I own a flower shop. If I don't work, I don't eat." "You deserve one evening off.” "I'll think about it." "You always say that." Lena smiled. "I promise I'll try." After ending the call, she continued walking through the bustling streets. Office workers hurried home while restaurants filled with customers escaping the cool evening air. She couldn't help but notice the contrast. Some people carried designer shopping bags worth more than she earned in a month. Others, like her, counted every naira before buying dinner. Still, she refused to envy anyone. Her mother had always said, 'Kindness costs nothing, but it makes you richer than money ever can.' Lena had never forgotten those words. As she approached a pedestrian crossing, a sleek black luxury car sped past, its polished exterior reflecting the city lights. She barely glanced at it, to her, it was just another expensive car belonging to someone whose life couldn't have been more different from hers. The traffic lights changed. Lena crossed the road and disappeared into the evening crowd, unaware that fate had quietly placed her on the same path as the man inside that luxury vehicle. Neither of them knew it yet, but before the night was over, their lives would collide in a way neither could ever imagine.
