The villa had settled into a strange kind of calm. The evening air was cooler now, brushing through the open glass doors of the living room like a ghost of summer. Everyone else had gone to bed—Katie tucked away safely in Yannis's arms, Milly retreating into the guest suite with a book she wasn't really reading, and the rest of the girls dispersed into quiet corners of the villa, unsure of where they now stood in this broken, mended web of friendships. But Adrian? Adrian couldn't sleep. He stood on the balcony just off the lounge, one hand resting on the stone railing, a cigarette slowly burning between his fingers. He didn't even smoke. Not really. Only when something inside him itched too loud to ignore. He let out a sigh and looked up at the sky. No stars. Still, he imagined them.
