Aria's POV
By sunset, Silver Fang Pack no longer looked like the place I had grown up in. The dusty streets had disappeared beneath carpets of white petals. Thousands of enchanted lanterns floated above the village, glowing with soft silver light that mimicked the stars. Music drifted from every corner of the settlement, and the scent of roasted venison, honey cakes, and moon blossoms filled the cool evening air.
Children laughed as they ran between the market stalls. Warriors polished their ceremonial armor until it gleamed. Young unmated wolves stood together, pretending not to be nervous while stealing anxious glances toward the Moon Altar.
Tonight would change someone's life. Perhaps many lives.
I adjusted the simple silver ribbon tying back my dark hair. It was the only decoration I owned.
I had found it years ago after a storm, tangled beneath the roots of an old oak tree. The ribbon had faded with time, but I treasured it anyway.
"Aria!"
I turned.
Old Martha, one of the kitchen servants, hurried toward me carrying a folded bundle wrapped in white cloth.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
"I'm sorry. Mrs. Hilda asked me to help in the pantry."
"I know."
Martha smiled warmly.
"But first..."
She held out the bundle.
“This is for you."
I frowned.
"For me?"
"Open it."
Carefully, I unfolded the cloth. Inside lay a pale blue dress. It wasn't expensive. The fabric had clearly been mended several times. But every stitch had been sewn with remarkable care.
I stared at it in disbelief.
"It's beautiful."
Martha chuckled.
"It belonged to my daughter before she found her mate."
"I can't accept this."
"You can."
Martha gently placed the dress into my hands.
"Every young woman deserves to feel beautiful during the Moon Ceremony."
Emotion tightened my throat. No one had ever given me something simply because they wanted to see me smile.
"Thank you."
Martha reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Aria's ear.
"Listen to me."
Her voice became serious.
"Don't let anyone convince you that your worth is decided by your rank."
I lowered her gaze.
"Sometimes that's difficult."
"I know."
"But difficult doesn't mean impossible."
For the first time that day...
I smiled. It was small. But genuine.
---
An hour later...I barely recognized herself. The blue dress fit almost perfectly. My dark hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders. The silver ribbon rested neatly against the back of my head.
When she looked into the tiny mirror hanging inside the servants' quarters...I didn't see the unwanted omega.
I saw Someone who deserved hope.
A knock interrupted my thoughts.
"Aria?"
It was Martha.
"They're gathering."
My heartbeat quickened. This was it. I took one last breath before stepping outside.
The village had transformed completely. Silver lanterns floated through the night sky like tiny moons. The ancient bell rang slowly, each toll echoing across the valley. Every path led toward the Moon Altar.
As I joined the growing crowd, conversations hushed around me. I was used to it. Some wolves whispered because I was an omega. Others whispered because of my striking silver eyes—a rare trait that no one in my family had possessed.
I ignored them. Tonight wasn't about proving anyone wrong. It was about believing, if only for a few hours, that destiny still had room for someone like me.
The Moon Altar rose from the center of the valley, carved from white stone older than any living wolf could remember. Its surface shimmered beneath the full moon. Around it stood representatives from neighboring packs, dressed in colors that reflected their territories.
I had never seen so many wolves gathered together. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement.
Then...The ceremonial horns sounded. Three long notes rolled through the valley.
The High Elder climbed onto the altar. He raised a silver staff toward the moon.
"Wolves of Silver Fang." His voice carried effortlessly through the crowd.
"Tonight, beneath the blessing of the Moon Goddess, destinies shall be revealed."
A chorus of cheers answered him.
One by one, names were called.
Some wolves laughed as glowing marks appeared on their wrists, revealing their mates. Others wept with happiness as they embraced. Parents cried. Friends celebrated. The joy was infectious.
I smiled for them. Even though no one celebrated with her.
Minutes passed. Then nearly an hour.
Still...
My name wasn't called. A familiar ache settled inside my chest.
Perhaps Lydia had been right. Perhaps... The Moon Goddess truly had forgotten me.
I lowered my head and quietly stepped away from the gathering. I didn't want anyone to see the disappointment in my eyes. I had almost reached the edge of the crowd when something changed.
Warmth.
It began deep within my chest. Gentle at first. Then overwhelming.
My breath caught. My wolf, usually calm, surged forward so suddenly that I staggered.
Mate... The whisper echoed through my soul.
I froze.
"No..." My heartbeat thundered.
It couldn't be.
Slowly...I lifted my eyes. The massive gates leading into the ceremonial grounds opened with a deafening boom. Every warrior immediately dropped to one knee. Every Alpha bowed. Even the High Elder lowered his head.
A royal procession entered beneath banners embroidered with a silver crown and a black wolf. At its center rode a man on a towering black stallion. His presence alone silenced thousands. He dismounted with effortless grace. Tall. Powerful. Dressed in a black ceremonial coat threaded with silver.
His expression revealed nothing, yet authority radiated from him like heat from a blazing fire. This was no Alpha. This was the ruler every kingdom answered to.
The Lycan King.
Kael Draven.
The moment his boots touched the sacred ground...My wolf cried out.
Mate.
Across the crowded valley...
Kael stopped walking. His head turned. His grey eyes found hers. And in that single heartbeat...The impossible happened. The Lycan King's calm expression cracked. Not with anger. Not with joy. With unmistakable shock.
