The atmosphere at the table was partly stuffy, stuffy because Richard kept on glaring daggers at Mishael and Kathleen who sat at the other end of the dining table.
Richard ate noisily. Trying to get the attention of the other two but they were too engrossed in their discussion to pay him any notice.
"Errr, errm." He cleared his throat. No one looked at him.
"Errr errm." He cleared his throat again and Mishael looked at him.
"What?" Mishael asked clearly pissed at Richard interrupting his conversation.
"Have you both never heard of table manners?" Richard questioned them earning weird looks from the both of them.
"Richard are you bothered about our table manners or you're bothered about the fact you're not part of our conversation?"
"Table manners please and stop hitting on my property." Richard replied Mishael's question.
"Property?" Kathleen guffawed then let out a snicker. "You're a big joke."
Kathleen faced Mishael and continued her conversation. Richard wasn't used to being ignored and right now, his closest friend also was ignoring him.
He dropped his cutleries noisily on the ceramic plate and excused himself from the table.
"What was that all about?" Kathleen asked Mishael who was refilling his wineglass for the fifth time.
Mishael gulped the wine and wiped his mouth.
"You mean Richard?, He's doesn't like being ignored. And we were doing just that. He'll get over it." Mishael told Kathleen as he helped himself to a large serving of rice and beef stew.
From the corner of his eye, he watched Kathleen.
"Richard tells me you're not scared of being captured by him?"
"Was he expecting me to be scared out of my bones?"
"Uhmm okay let me rephrase. Richard said you didn't throw a tantrum or wail or screech when he came to pick you from your father's house." Mishael explained.
Kathleen dropped her fork and knife calmly as she peered into her almost empty plate.
"You might see it as pride or something else but, it's not. When I saw Mr Wyatt in my house, I knew it wasn't normal. When my father broke the news to me, I just took it as it is. Maybe the shock hasn't registered or, I've been expecting this from my father so I'm not surprised."
She explained. Mishael had a stunned look on his face.
"What do you mean by you've been expecting it from your father?, You don't need to talk about it." Mishael said seemingly more interested in his food than in having a conversation with Kathleen.
"I've lived all my life in a Mafia community," Kathleen started. "I knew what was in store for me. My future was already sealed. My father never really loved me. He always promised to sell me off to one man later in life. I never thought he would do it but here am I aren't I? Let's say something inside me has long since been expecting this." She finished.
Mishael took a long look at her, reading her countenance.
"That's sad." He said.
"But on the bright side, you get me." He said stuffing desert into his mouth.
"Right." Kathleen mumbled playing with her food.
They were still engrossed in their food when the front doors burst open introducing two men.
The face of one was badly bruised and the other, stood pointing a gun directly at the other one's head.
Kathleen and Mishael froze. Mishael was the first to snap out of his daze.
"Sniper, who's this and why is he like this?" Mishael questioned the other man who didn't look too bad to see. Just a few cuts and bruises.
The man Mishael called sniper, dropped the badly injured man on the tiles "He was the one who had been stalking us for days now. He also set off the bomb." Sniper said as he straightened himself almost standing at the same height with Mishael.
"You know the boss doesn't like blood in his house." Mishael scolded.
"But—" Sniper's statement was cut short as Richard entered the room. "But, what?" He asked, his eyes flaming as he fixed them on the pool of blood the injured man was making.
"He was the one who set the bomb off, sir." Sniper quickly started explaining himself Richard gave him a cold stare that seemed to make the temperature of the room drop some few degrees.
"He said something that might interest you. He said his boss was going to make you deliver the prize to him." Richard paused. His eyes are losing some of its iciness but not all of it.
"And who's his boss?" Richard asked.
"He wouldn't say. I beat the s**t out of him, he was still damn silent." Sniper complained.
Kathleen stood at a corner watching everything.
True she was the daughter of a ring leader but she never in life saw so much blood.
"Who do you work for?" Richard asked squatting to the level of the other man. He had just taken a bath and his hair was still damp and dropping water.
The other man wore a sinister smile on his face "The person who'll defeat you and take Hue city from you." The man said and spat some blood on Richard's face.
"Tonight will be a very long night." Richard said as he walked into his room and came out with a knife.
Kathleen flinched as Richard walked past her.
Mishael stood between the man and Richard. "Not here, not here." He said, shaking his head.
"He's already made a mess of my floor, why don't we finish it." Richard replied, trying to maneuver past Mishael. They stood toe to toe though Richard was two inches taller than Mishael.
"Richard, you're scaring her." Mishael pointed towards Kathleen whose eyes were fixed on the bleeding man on the floor. 'Goddamit' Richard murmured while massaging his temple.
"She just got here, she doesn't need to watch us work." Mishael said, placing one hand on Richard's chest and using the other free hand to remove the knife from his grasp.
"Fine. Sniper, take him to the warehouse." Richard commanded. Sniper walked towards the bleeding man and yanked him off the ground, drawing him out of the house.
"Get her something to wear and take her to the other house." Richard told Mishael.
"And the mess here?" Mishael asked.
"I'll call someone to come clean it up." Richard replied.
"Where would you be?"
"I'll see to it that, that man talks." Richard said.
"I think you should be with her while I make him talk." Mishael said his gaze lying on Kathleen who was now seated, shivering.
"No, you stay with her."
With those final words Richard exited the room.
"Come on Kathleen, let's go." Mishael said. Handing her his coat which she subconsciously wrapped around her body.
