Chapter Two:An Offer Wrapped in Shadows Morning arrived without kindness. The pale sunlight creeping through the thin curtains did little to warm the tiny apartment. The old ceiling fan turned lazily above them, squeaking every few seconds as though it had grown tired of fighting another humid day. Aria was already awake. She stood in the cramped kitchen, stirring a pot of oatmeal while glancing repeatedly at the notebook lying open beside her. It wasn't a diary. It was a list. Rent – Overdue. Hospital bill – ₦2,480,000. Electricity – Final notice. Groceries. Every item felt heavier than the last. She sighed quietly and closed the notebook before Liam could see it. "Something smells good." His sleepy voice drifted from the hallway. Aria turned and smiled. "I wouldn't call oatmeal 'good,' but it's breakfast." Liam grinned as he shuffled into the kitchen, still rubbing sleep from his eyes. "It's food. That's enough." He tried to sound cheerful, but she noticed how carefully he lowered himself onto the chair his chest had been hurting more often lately. He never admitted it. He didn't have to. She could see it. "You have a check-up today," she reminded him. "I know." "And don't try to convince the doctor you're perfectly healthy." He raised both hands in surrender. "I'll behave." She laughed softly. "You? Behave? That'll be the day." For a few precious minutes, life felt almost normal. Just a sister teasing her little brother over breakfast. No overdue bills. No ruined career. No fear. She wished she could freeze time. After walking Liam to the bus stop, Aria headed toward the subway station. She had spent most of the night searching for jobs online. Receptionist. Waitress. Cashier. Personal assistant. She had applied to everything. Her phone buzzed. An email. Her heart skipped. She stopped walking and opened it immediately. "We appreciate your interest..." Her smile faded before she reached the second sentence. Another rejection. She deleted it without finishing. Maybe rejection hurt less when you didn't read all the words. Across the city... The top floor of Devereaux International buzzed with controlled chaos. Executives hurried through glass corridors carrying folders and tablets. Assistants whispered into phones. Security officers stood at every entrance. No one smiled. Not on days when Lucien Devereaux had scheduled a board meeting. The conference room doors opened. Lucien entered without saying a word. Every conversation died instantly. He took his seat at the head of the table. "Let's begin." A middle-aged executive cleared his throat. "Mr Devereaux... before the quarterly report, there's another matter." Lucien looked at him. "The board has received another letter from your grandfather's legal team." Silence. Every eye shifted toward Lucien. "I've already read it." "Then you understand the situation." "I do." The executive leaned forward. "The board believes it would be wise to begin considering..." "A wife?" His calm interruption filled the room. No one answered. Lucien folded his hands. "If the company depends on my marital status rather than my ability to lead, then perhaps we're discussing the wrong problem." The room fell silent again. One by one, the executives lowered their eyes. The meeting moved on. But Lucien knew they weren't finished. They were waiting. Waiting for him to fail. Meanwhile... Aria stepped out of another office building. Another interview. Another polite smile. Another rejection. This time they hadn't even looked at her résumé. The hiring manager had recognised her name. That had been enough. She leaned against a nearby wall and closed her eyes. How long can this go on? A sudden shout snapped her attention forward. "Watch out!" She opened her eyes just in time to see a little boy chasing a football into the busy street. A black SUV sped toward him. Without thinking— Aria ran. She grabbed the child around the waist and threw both of them onto the pavement. The SUV screeched to a halt less than a meter away. For a moment... Everything stopped. The boy burst into tears. His mother rushed forward, sobbing as she hugged him. "Oh my God... thank you... thank you..." Aria smiled shakily. "He's okay." Her knees trembled as she stood. Only then did she notice the expensive black SUV. The rear passenger door slowly opened. A pair of polished black shoes touched the pavement. Then long legs. A tailored charcoal suit. Finally... The man from yesterday's television interview. Lucien Devereaux. His sharp grey eyes met hers for the first time. Neither of them spoke. He looked at the frightened child. Then at Aria. "You pushed him out of the way." His voice was calm. Deep. Almost unreadable. She brushed dust from her sleeves. "Someone had to." He studied her for another second. Most people would have rushed toward him. Asked for a photograph. Mentioned his name. She hadn't. She looked at him the same way she would look at any stranger. That was... Unexpected. Nathan stepped beside Lucien. "Sir, are you alright?" Lucien never looked away from Aria. "I'm fine." Aria bent down and picked up the folder she had dropped. The papers inside had scattered across the road. She gathered them quickly. One résumé. A recommendation letter. A newspaper clipping. Before she could reach the last sheet... Lucien picked it up. His eyes skimmed the headline. Young Journalist Wins National Investigative Award. He glanced at the name beneath the photograph. Aria Bennett. Recognition flickered across his face. "So..." he said quietly, "You're the journalist." Aria froze. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Then she took the paper from his hand. "I was." Without another word, she turned and walked away. Lucien watched her disappear into the crowd. Nathan frowned. "Should I call her back?" Lucien's gaze remained fixed on the busy sidewalk. "No." "Then why are we standing here?" A faint, almost invisible smile touched Lucien's lips. "Because I have a feeling..." "...this won't be the last time our paths cross
