Seven months pregnant and the baby shower had begun. My parents had come, as we had the party at a hotel in Dallas. Bobbi Jo’s parents and mine were meeting for the first time.
She and I had run off to Vegas to tie the knot after agreeing to get married. We didn’t want to wait long to get married and change her name to mine.
As our parents talked quietly in a corner, Bobbi Jo and I sat together as her sister opened the presents. Bobbi Jo hadn’t been feeling well in the last week. She had an appointment in a week, so we decided it wasn’t anything she needed to make a special appointment about. Until she gasped for air, grabbed my hand, then looked at me with frightened eyes. “Cash!”
