CHAPTER 10 PART II : LEAVING

727 Words
The car ride home was tense, heavy with the quiet weight of what had just happened at the mall. Isabel’s hands clutched the edge of her hoodie, fingers gripping the fabric until her knuckles whitened. Every glance outside, every passing car, seemed loaded with eyes, with recognition, with threat. Jayden’s grip on the steering wheel was calm, but his jaw was set, the dark intensity in his eyes unmistakable. He didn’t speak immediately. He didn’t need to. The silence itself was charged, dangerous. Finally, he broke it. “You were seen,” he said softly, voice low, controlled. She swallowed hard. “I… I know. I didn’t think anyone would notice. I thought… I thought I could be careful.” “You were careful,” he said, glancing at her briefly. “But not careful enough.” Her chest tightened. “Then what now? What do we do?” He inhaled, exhaling slowly. “We have to disappear—for a while. You can’t be out there. Not until it’s safe.” She shook her head. “No. I don’t want to leave you.” Her voice wavered, a mixture of fear and desperation. “I want to stay. I don’t care about the risk.” He reached over, gently taking her hand in his. Warm, firm, grounding. “I know you don’t. I know you want to stay. But this isn’t about wanting. It’s about surviving. About protecting you. And me.” Her eyes filled with tears. She hated the fear, hated the tension, hated being torn between loyalty and love, but she nodded, swallowing hard. “I… I understand. But it hurts.” “I know,” he said softly, his thumb brushing across her knuckles. “It hurts because it’s real. Because you care. Because we’ve built something… fragile, beautiful. And I’m not willing to risk it. Not now.” Her breath hitched. “But… leaving… how? Where?” He kept his eyes on the road, steady, deliberate. “I’ll book you a train. You’ll go back to your city. Back to your parents. I’ll stay hidden. We’ll communicate—letters, messages, everything. But you have to go now.” Tears blurred her vision, but she obeyed. She wanted to argue, to resist, to stay with him in the car until she felt safe. But the logic, the awareness, the weight of trust he had built over years held her still. By the time they arrived at the station, her hands trembled. She clutched her bag tightly, knuckles white. The familiar hum of the trains, the crowds, the normalcy of strangers moving past—it felt alien. Alien and terrifying. Jayden stepped closer, hand on her shoulder, grounding her. “You’ll be safe. You’ll be careful. You’ll wait for me,” he said firmly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “And we’ll continue. Trust me.” She nodded, heart pounding, chest tight. “I… I trust you.” “You know why,” he said softly, a shadow of a smile crossing his lips. “Because it’s only with me you can survive. And because I love you, Isabel.” Her chest tightened. The words echoed in her mind. Love. Trust. Loyalty. Danger. Desire. She had never felt so conflicted, so aware, so tethered to someone who both terrified and anchored her. “I love you too,” she whispered, voice trembling. He leaned close, brushing her hair back, resting his forehead against hers for a brief, grounding moment. Then he stepped back. “Go,” he said softly. “And be safe.” As the train pulled away, Isabel’s eyes were fixed on the receding figure of Jayden on the platform. She hated leaving him. Hated the pull in her chest. But she obeyed. She had no choice. And deep down, she knew that trust, loyalty, and love were stronger than the fear gnawing at her. The world outside the train blurred past her window. Every station, every passing crowd, reminded her of the danger. But she clutched her bag, inhaled slowly, and whispered under her breath: “I’ll see you again. I promise.” And somewhere, watching from a distance, Jayden allowed himself a small, restrained smile. She was safe. For now. But the stakes had changed, and the tension—between love, trust, and danger—had never been higher.
