Chapter 1

Carolina's POV, It was my first Time in Italy. My first day in Italy and It is also becoming the worst day of my entire life. I just found out that my boyfriend of six years had been cheating on me. Not only that, he had even engaged another woman which is the reason he’d been leaving America for Italy in the guise of ‘BUSINESS TRIP.’ What hurt most isn’t even the betrayal. It’s how he had easily ended a six years relationship without a second thought after I caught him balls deep into another woman. A woman, who according to him checks all the lists I would never fit into. Sexy, Rich, classy and she comes from a Line of Nobles unlike me that can’t even boast of a family Background. And overall in his words; “You are nothing like Chiara and you can never be, Carolina. Aside from being a lowlife, you can’t even pleasure a man in bed. s*x with you is so boring and my six years with you has been hell.” Right now, I was in some club with sapphire, my childhood friend. It’s my first time in a setting like this. Everywhere was dark with just thick red lights illuminating the place. All over were naked adults dancing to the blasting music. While Stench of alcohol and weeds literally poisoned the air. Gosh! How do people enjoy this place? Everywhere wrecks of nothing but sin. Sapphire is the one who’d forced me down here saying it’ll help blow off some steams. I’m not sure if that’s working but at least I'm grateful I’ve a friend like her residing here in Italy. “That i***t deserves to pay for toiling with your heart, Carolina.” Sapphire has been ranting and boiling hard. Her voice mincing with the pounding music in the hall. “He wasted six good years of your life. Girl!!! If I were you I’ll serve him the hottest revenge possible. Hook up with some big shot and prove to that scumbag that you can be hot and sexy. Make him regret dumping you.” “Sounds like a perfect revenge plan,” I pause and sip my drink. “But I’m not going through all that for Patrick. He doesn't deserve it. My concern now is how to sneak into Enzo Alessio’s life As soon as possible.” My last words visibly hit sapphire like a thunderbolt making her choke on her shot glass. The anger on her face a while ago morphs into a terrific shock. “Enzo?!” She reiterates, as if confirming she heard wrong. I’m not surprised by her reaction. It’s like a common ritual for anyone to freak out by the mere sound of Enzo Alessio. ENZO ALESSIO is an Italian Mafia Boss rumored to be some supernatural human-god because according to rumors, he could walk in a war zone blind folded and slay everyone without getting harmed. Some say he has no heart because he never forgives his offenders and he gives them the most barbaric kinds of death. Rumors also have it that Enzo has no respect or regard for women, he doesn’t walk by the mafia rules. He makes them. He bends them. Because he’s the Don of the underworld. Now the question is are all these even true? Why would this kind of man still be walking freely out there? No one knows and I don’t care. But unfortunately, the media where I work as a journalist care too much about scandals and I’m assigned with the task to dig up Enzo’s dirt, find out if these rumors are true and publish about them to the public. That’s my whole purpose for coming Down to Italy. “If I heard you correctly. You want to SNEAK into Enzo’s life? Like the Italian most ruthless Gangster? You know if you want suicide you could just jump off the bridge right? I mean that’ll be a much less painful way to die.” If I'm not too broken right now, I might be laughing at that. “I'm a serious sapphire. The media wants me to conduct private investigations on Enzo to find out if the rumors about him are true.” “And do you know the severity of that?”sapphire goes all stern. “You could have declined the assignment. Enzo is not someone you want to come across...” “And you think I don’t already know that?” I huff. “Look. My mother is in a critical condition. She’s suffering from a brain tumor. She needs surgery and the Doctors are demanding an outrageous amount which I’ll never be able to raise. Patrick refused to help out. The media just happens to be offering a task with a price reward that triples the surgery amount. you don’t expect me to sit back and watch my mother die when there’s an alternative do you? Double crossing Enzo seems to be my only way of saving my mother.” Sapphire's face grows pale for a while, visibly showing empathy for my situation and then she sighs,“I understand you Carolina. But Honestly, there’s a higher chance that you’re not going to make it out alive.” If that’s supposed to scare me and makes me back down then it doesn’t work one inch. My heart is too wounded to even feel anything right now. Or maybe it’s because I’ve already known what I’m getting into and I’ve long braced myself up for the worst. The media knows that too, which is why they placed such a high amount as a price reward. Yet, Every journalist had backed away from the project like the plague. So I know the risk. “With the way you speak of him,” I sip from my rum. “Anyone would think you know him...” “That’s because I know him.” Sapphire cuts in with a whisper and my brows draw up together in surprise. “He’s the owner of this club we are in and I used to work here. I have never seen his face though. No one has, aside from the people extremely closest to him. He always wears this ominous Mask but I know him enough to vouch that you don’t want to mess with him. He will sniff you and catch you right before you act. And you know what he’ll do next? he’ll torture you and makes you beg him to kill you.” All of that still doesn’t affect me one bit because it isn’t new. Even the Mask! He’s popularly known for hiding his blood cuddling face behind a mask. But what completely knocks me off is that Sapphire knows him in person. I never imagined meeting with Enzo would be this easy. I open my mouth, about to ask Sapphire to help me get to Enzo but My eyes spot something that knocks the words off me. My Blood instantly runs cold and everything freeze… A few meters away, right behind Sapphire, There’s a man heading towards the stairs. His back is facing my view but what catches my attention is the red dot dancing at his back. I know what that is. Everyone does. Someone is about to be shot right here in the club and the realization of that makes me shudder. “What’s up with you Carolina, are you okay?” I clearly hear sapphire asking me but my eyes are too fixed on the red spot. I spin my head around trying to tail the source of the red dot but it's all a vain quest. So before I know it, I find myself lifting off the chair. The next seconds run by in flash as I rushes towards the man to rescue him from the gun point. Sapphire is yelling something at me but her voice fades into the club music and I’m unable to make sense of her. Dashing up to the man, I attempt to swerve him off his spot but it’s in that split-second that the rifle goes off and Bang! A gunshot booms in the hall, hollering screams follows and I feel an excruciating sharp piercing at my shoulder. “Carolina!!!” A voice screams and I scream too. A bullet just penetrated my shoulder and the force of it bounced me back with a ferocious speed. Taking me to the ground until a strong arm catches me midway. So that I’m now in the arms of a total stranger, blood gushing out of my shoulder. In a plot twist, the man I’m supposed to have rescued is now holding me up in his arms and there's something extremely sinister about him. Something that makes me cower and sends dread down my spine. It’s the gold Venetian mask coating his face and the emotions radiating from his dark eyes which are beneath it. Different emotions are looming in them all at once. First is shock Then Rage... And hatred... The hate intensifies... until he’s glaring at me like I’m the most loathsome thing on earth. And suddenly, he refers to me with a strange name,“Zylaria?!”
