CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR The hour is almost up. The students check their dishes in the ovens. All four of them test to see if their dish is done. The male takes his out first. From what Sarah can tell, his dish is seven, round, yellow crumbles. As far away as she is, she strains to see but is able to make out that each one of them has a brown ring on the top. When Umula made crumbles, the brown ring wasn’t a good thing. This means she left them in too long. When she left them in too long, she would speak in her native language under her breath and then apologize. Sarah never understood why she acted the way she did. They tasted just fine.
