Guest Serena

I finally summoned courage and went in, they both turned to me. I gave them a practiced smile. They needn't know I heard what they just discussed. I moved to my baby’s crib and bent to carry him, leaving the both of them to their devices. That night, when I slept, my husband wasn’t in bed but when I woke up at midnight to breastfeed Leo, he was there. In the morning, when he woke up, I was already awake, dressed and sitting at my dressing table, polishing my nails. “Good morning,” he said in his morning voice. “Good morning,” I responded while I kept polishing my nails. “There’s something I wanted to discuss with you." My breath caught, I was scared of what this discussion would be about. Our eyes met in the mirror, his eyes its usual color and calm at the same time. “I have found a nurse for Leo, you are the Luna. I don’t want you going through stress so you will be able to do your duties in the mansion.” I smiled at him through the mirror. "I can nurse my baby just fine and perform my duties in the mansion, you don’t need to worry about me.” He wanted to retort, but I cut him off. "How about we talk about your ex staying in our home?” “You don’t need to worry about Serena; she’s in the past. She just needed a place to stay and seeing that the mansion is big, I offered her a place to stay.” "Without asking for your wife’s opinion?” I asked right back. He looked at me with surprise in his eyes, I had never questioned him before His voice remained calm. "You are right. I should have spoken with you first.” My gaze remained on him through the mirrors, he looked sincere, but I have already come to realize that I don't know him. My shoulders relaxed a bit, despite that. Then he continued. "But Serena had nowhere else to go." Then, I turned to look at him, he must be unserious. I went back to what I was doing, then asked, "When would she be leaving?” “Oh, very soon, not to worry about that.” “Also, this is our bedroom, it might not mean much to you, but ask her to stop coming here.” With that, I stood up. I was ready to go downstairs when I heard the knock on the door. I thought it was Helen; she would usually come around this time to tell me breakfast was ready. So I said, “Come in." Serena came in, dressed like she was on her way to a date and she came here to tell us she was leaving. “I made Kael’s favorite meal, just a way to say thank you for allowing me stay," she said smilingly. I looked at my husband, prompting him, this was the time to tell her to stop coming into our room, but instead, he said, "Thank you, I will be down in a few seconds.” She smiled and left. I looked at my husband for a few seconds before walking out with my baby’s monitor in hand. Breakfast was quiet, I ate her meal because I did not want the maids speculating. I was once a maid and I know this is something that would cause gossip between them. A few hours after Kael went for work, I sat in the sitting room with Leo in his mobile crib near me when i saw some sets of people coming in. Several unfamiliar faces were coming in with some wrapped items I didn't know. "Excuse me,” I said. They turned to me, greeted then said, "The luna asked us to change the decorations of the sitting room.” Another said, “We were asked to hang new paintings.” I looked at them, I knew I wasn’t built for this because I did not know what to reply to them with. I took a deep breath and then said, "I am the luna and I haven’t made such requests.” Right on cue, Serena came in. "Aria, I have been looking at the mansion these past few days and it got me thinking about your taste and how your taste doesn’t match with Kael’s. He had always preferred neutral colors like gray, white, and maybe black, but he doesn’t like other bright colors because they give him a headache, so I have decided to help you to make it better. I hope you don’t mind, I just wanted to save you the trouble.” She moved a few steps away before adding, “And yes, he likes lilies. " Serena picked up the vase from the table, replacing the roses with fresh white lilies. "Much better." She smiled. "Kael has never really liked roses." She turned to me. "Didn't he tell you?” I smiled at her. "Thank you for your concern, but over here, it is not necessary, my husband likes whatever I like and he has left the home to me. When I need help, I will get it from professionals, now…” I turned to the strangers. “Thank you for coming, but your services won't be needed today. You can leave.” Without waiting for a response, I walked to Leo's crib intending to go back upstairs. I saw the workers exchanged looks of uncertainty and silently collected their things before filing out of the house until it was just Serena and I left. Serena crossed her arms, her smile never faltering. "You've changed, Aria." "I know how to be nice without letting people take advantage of me." She smiled again. "I just hope you feel that way after tonight." I felt knots form in my stomach. "Why?" "Oh..." It seemed like a genuine expression of surprise. "Kael didn't tell you?" My heart beat erratically. "Tell me what?" She pursed her lips like she had revealed too much. "My apologies, I thought he would tell you before going to work." She turned to start walking up the stairs. "Just forget I said anything." This lady is trying to see how patient I can be, I thought. She paused but did not turn around. "I really hope you are ready." With those final words, she walked up the stairs, leaving me standing in place. Ready... For what? I found myself looking at the clock on the wall. Kael would be home in a few hours, for the first time since we got married... I wasn't sure I wanted him to come home.
