Chapter 2

1235 Words
It was the next morning, covers were sprawled out everywhere and we was all curled up together. The morning light came piercing through my curtain's as I slowly started to wake up, rubbing my eyes and grabbing my phone to check the time it was 9:15am, today was the day. My flight wasn't until later than evening but I wanted to spend my time with my family and friends. We all woke up, groaning from being curled up in my bed. I was first to use the bathroom, I did my business, had a quick wash down, brushed my teeth and tied my hair up in a messy bun. The girls went in after me. We came tumbling down the stairs to find my mom in her element, singing to the radio while she made pancakes. My dad was already at the table with his newspaper, but his eyes weren't on the paper they were on my mom as she gracefully moved around the kitchen, his eyes were filled with love and admiration for her. I would love to have what my parents have. My mom kept the pancakes flowing and flipping them and they were all perfect! My mom brought over honey, golden syrup, fruit and Nutella to go on our pancakes. My dad puts down his paper and grabs himself a plate and piles on pancakes, and put some toppings on, and then we all grab what we can. "Zara when's your flight again?" My dad said, "Oh I've got to be at the airport for around 8, my flight leaves at 9 or 10 I think?" I replied. "That's fine, we will all see you off on your adventure, and if you see any of your relatives tell them we said hi!"  We all ate these delicious pancakes and thanked my mom for cooking them as we always do. We ran up the stairs to get ready for our Netflix binge, it would be a while before I could even use wi-fi so I wanted to make the most of it now. We all got in our comfies which usually was just baggy clothing. We sat and watched almost everything on Netflix, we laughed, we cried and we gasped at all the plot twists in the movies and series we was watching. I didn't even realize the time! It was almost 6! I quickly got up and ran to finish the rest of my packing and take my bag downstairs ready to leave. I printed off my boarding pass and ticket. We all stepped outside, and walked down to my dad's big black SUV, my dad in the driver's seat, my mom in the passenger side and us in the back as we took the long ride to JFK airport, it only takes about 56 minutes on a good day. As I take in the sights of the city going past through the window. After what feels like forever, we arrive at the departures. I grab my backpack and place it on my back, I give my girls a long bear hug, I'm trying to hold back my years because I'm going to miss them, then I turn to my parents and give them an even bigger hug, I can feel my mom crying and that set me off tears flowing down my cheeks, my mom tries to give me a small smile to let me know everything will be alright. I hug her even tighter. I wave goodbye as I wipe away my tears and head to the checking in desk, I give the woman in front of me my ticket and passport, she asks  "Anything to check in?"  "No only hand luggage" I replied, she gave me a wide smile and told me where to go and what gate I needed to be at. I thanked her and set myself off to security, declaring all my items I was carrying and went through no problems. I arrived to the massive hall full of boards with all the flights on and took a seat opposite the board. I pull out one of the books I packed about the history of Guyana, I click through the pages and one page caught my eye, it was about a ruby red Amulet. "This is the oldest picture to date of the magical amulet, it has been said to hold magical powers to whoever wears it. The powers are of the elements, air, fire, earth and water. It has been in a family for many years, but many feared this family due to the amulet and it's powers, but some of the villagers wanted to bring this family down to harness the powers but they never succeeded. The family buried this precious amulet in a small golden box somewhere in the many caves in the mountains, it's whereabouts is still unknown." It seemed minutes went by as I was reading, I checked my phone and quickly looked up at the board. FLIGHT 365 TO GEORGETOWN IS NOW BOARDING AT GATE 76. I quickly put my book back in my bag, and shot up to head towards the gate. I was greeted by a woman wearing a red blazer and skirt, with matching lipstick, her hair up in a tight bun with no loose bits, looking very professional, I passed over my ticket she glanced down and said, "Enjoy your flight!" I nodded in response. I headed through onto the plane, feeling so nervous for the first time in what feels like forever. I'm alone. Yes I have my family and friends but they wasn't with me. I was going to find my extended family if I could, but if I can't I can at least tick Guyana off my bucket list, going back to where my parents were born and grew up. They always made sure I had everything I needed and more, they provided a life for me more than what they had back in Guyana. I would be forever grateful for them. The flight was going to be at least 5 and a half hours long, I decided to just sink into the foam of the chair and have a little snooze so I can feel somewhat refreshed after the flight. I had what seemed like 2 business men sat next to me, I could only assume because they were both in dark coloured suits, and both had similar coloured briefcases that matched their suits. I watch the air hostess give there usual safety speech, and read the safety card before placing it back in the pocket in front of me. I took a breath and gripped onto my seat as we picked up speed, it was my first time flying and flying on my own at that matter, one of the men noticed that I was apprehensive, and he took my hand into his and nodded at me. At first I thought it was super weird, why was this man holding my hand, but then it was comforting. He let go once we had settled in the air. "Thank you, it's my first time flying" I turned to him and said. "Your quite alright, I could tell, don't you have any one with you?" He asked. "No I don't." I replied, he looked sad for me, so I gave him a reassuring smile. I say back and relaxed, and soon I was fast asleep. Probably not a sight the man wanted to see, but what are you going to do during a long flight.
