The Amulet

Chapter 8

As I climb higher, watching rocks roll down the side of the mountain I'm now in a pickle. I've come to the edge of some ledge, hugging the mountain side trying to move slowly and carefully, as I dig my machete in the side of the mountain to keep steady, slowly guiding myself round. This is the tenth cave I've come across, now with the end in sight I see the eleventh cave, the air is much thinner up here so I take a quick water break and wipe down some of the sweat. Looking into this mass cave, it looks like the darkness would consume me, it's secrets lure me in knowing what I'm looking for. My thoughts go back to Cas, I wonder how he is doing with my Uncle? I carefully climb inside the cave, getting out my torch, it illuminates the cave walls, looking at the inside of the walls I see paintings, my fingers run along the paintings it looks like some tribal work, as I walk further the paintings get more and more frequent. As I slide down the sides of the cave my fingers caressing the walls sending tingles down my arm, the feeling foreign in my body, nothings ever sent tingles down me apart from this morning when Cas put lotion on my back. 

My torch lighting up the side of the cave that I'm touching it shows me lots of holes in the walls, I suddenly turn and see something glowing, brighter and brighter as I get closer I stop. It's the box that's glowing, I touch the box, it sends shockwaves through me, it opens up to my touch, and the amulet is glowing ruby red, I run my hand over the gem, making me shiver. The feel of it is so cold, yet warm. It's weird. I get out my phone and notice I have reception, I quickly phone home,

"Hey baby! How are you doing? Where are you?"

"Hey mom! I'm good and I'm in a cave."

"Oh darling! Where's Uncle Felix, is he with you?"

"No mom, he's with someone, he gave me directions to here, is dad home?"

"Yeah he is sweetie, I'll get him for you" I wait a couple of minutes before my dad gets on the phone

"Hey Zara is everything okay?"

"Yes dad, everything's okay, dad I was wondering about the family's amulet?"

"You what? Zara please say you haven't opened it?"

"Dad it opened on its own, it glowed, and I feel like it wants to come with me?"

"Oh Zara, please be careful! That amulet has alot of power, we don't want it to be used in vain"

"Dad I know, but this feeling is from the amulet like it wants to come out, but I wanted to phone you to ask if I can bring it back home with us? So then Auntie Julietta and Uncle Felix can live normal lives, dad they are so lonely! They have no one, and we have eachother, I want them to be happy"

"Zara if you want to bring it here then I cannot stop you"

"Okay thanks dad! I love and miss you and mom so much! I'll see you soon!"

I hang up the phone, the amulet is still glowing, my fingers wrap around the amulet when suddenly, a burst of energy flies out, the amulet wraps around me, I feel the wind rushing round me as it lifts me off my feet, spinning around, and slowly sets me down, I look down and find the amulet across my collarbone, sitting perfectly as if it was meant to be. I look back in the box the amulet was in, there's some other things in there a small picture of my dad with his sister and brother, then another of a different man with what I can assume are his siblings and lots of photos looking similar to the first. I take these out these must be my ancestors.

I start to head out of the cave putting the photos I found in my backpack, I see that the sun is slowly starting to fall, as I start my descent to my uncle, I hope he isn't mad at me for taking the amulet and my plans to take it back to the states where he and my auntie can lead normal lives not living in hiding anymore, no one can find it over there.
