14 14The generous-hearted Thanasis seemed to recognise that his favourite customers were not in the mood for banter that night. He even refrained from addressing Helen in his usual jovial manner as La Belle Hélène. Summoning his son Vangelis in a rather imperious manner which fell little short of clicking his fingers, he managed to seat Day and Helen, provide them with empty glasses, water and bread, and have their favourite local red wine in front of them in a remarkably short space of time. “Lipon,” he said then with a smile. “Shall I bring you a few small plates?” LiponDay nodded gratefully and reflected afresh what a wonderful country this was.
