The New Directive

The message arrived at midnight. Derek's monitors flashed red. Not a Frequency spike. Something else. A transmission. Encrypted. Military-grade. Ethan was already awake. He'd been restless all night. The peace felt fragile. Like glass waiting to shatter. "What is it?" "A message. Addressed to you. From someone named General Harrison." "Who's General Harrison?" "Head of a new task force. Replacing Project Echo. They're calling it Operation Sentinel." Ethan read the message. Ethan Cole. I know who you are. I know what you've done. I know about your son. Meet me at the coordinates below. Come alone. Don't tell anyone. I have information about a threat to your community. Time is short. Ethan stared at the screen. "It's a trap." "Probably." "Then why would I go?" "Because if it's not a trap, you need to know what's coming." --- Ethan stood on the porch. The mountains were dark. The stars were bright. Nora joined him. "You're not going alone." "I have to. Harrison said to come alone." "Harrison is a stranger. You don't owe him anything." "I owe the community protection. If there's a threat, I need to know." "Then I'll go with you. I'll stay out of sight. If anything happens, I'll be there." Ethan considered. "Okay. But stay hidden." --- The coordinates were a warehouse outside Billings. Abandoned. Industrial. Empty. Ethan walked through the front door. His footsteps echoed. A figure stepped out of the shadows. Tall. Gray hair. Military uniform. "Mr. Cole. Thank you for coming." "General Harrison. You said you had information." "I do. But first, you need to understand something. I'm not like Victor Cross. I don't want to hurt your community. I want to protect it." "Protect it from what?" Harrison pulled out a tablet. Showed Ethan images. Satellite photos. A facility in the desert. "This is a new research center. Black budget. Funded by private interests. They've been studying Receivers. Trying to replicate the Frequency." "Replicate it?" "They want to create their own Receivers. Controlled. Weaponized. They see the Frequency as a tool. Something to be used." Ethan's blood went cold. "Who's running it?" "A man named Dr. Marcus Webb." Ethan felt the world tilt. "Marcus Webb is dead. He was possessed by Chimera. He died in the facility collapse." "Marcus Webb is alive. He survived. He's been hiding. Rebuilding. He wants revenge against everyone who crossed him. Especially you." --- Ethan stepped back. His mind was racing. "I saw Marcus die. I watched the building collapse on him." "Marcus Webb was a survivor. He's always been a survivor. He used the chaos to escape. Faked his death. Started over." "Why would he want revenge? He's the one who betrayed us." "Because he blames you for Chimera's defeat. He thinks you took away his legacy. His work. His purpose. He wants to take away everything you love." Ethan's hands shook. "Where is he now?" "The facility is in Nevada. Near the original site. He's been there for three years. Building. Planning." "When is he going to move?" "He already has. His first wave of controlled Receivers is complete. He's preparing to deploy them." "Deploy them where?" Harrison's face was grim. "Here. Your community. He's going to attack at dawn." --- Ethan ran out of the warehouse. Nora emerged from the shadows. "I heard everything." "We need to get back. Warn everyone. Prepare." "You can't stop an attack with warnings. You need a plan." "Then we make one." --- The drive back felt like hours. Ethan called Derek. "Marcus Webb is alive. He's sending controlled Receivers to attack the community. At dawn." Derek's voice was tight. "How do you know?" "General Harrison told me. I believe him." "Believing him isn't enough. We need evidence." "I don't have evidence. I have instinct. And instinct says we need to be ready." --- The ranger station was chaos when they returned. Liam was already organizing defenses. Charlotte was waking everyone. Richard was arming himself. "How do you fight controlled Receivers?" Elena asked. "You don't fight them," Nora said. "You reach them. They're still people. They're just being used." "How do you reach them?" "The same way we reach everyone. With the Frequency. With connection." Alex stepped forward. "I can help. The fragments are part of me now. I can reach into their minds. Free them." "Are you sure?" "No. But I have to try." --- The sun was rising over the mountains. Beautiful. Peaceful. Ethan stood at the edge of the community. Watched the treeline. "They're coming," Nora said. "I know." "How many?" "Derek's monitors show at least thirty. Maybe more." "Thirty controlled Receivers. Armed with Frequency weapons." "We can't fight them with force. We have to reach them." --- The first wave appeared at dawn. Men and women. Eyes blank. Bodies moving like machines. Alex stepped forward. His eyes glowed white. "I can feel them. They're not in control. They're being puppeted." "Can you free them?" "I can try." Alex raised his hands. White light pulsed from his fingers. It hit the controlled Receivers. They stumbled. Stopped. Then continued advancing. "It's not working," Ethan said. "They're too deep. Marcus is controlling them directly." "Then we need to stop Marcus." --- Ethan turned to Nora. "Can you find him? Connect to his Frequency?" Nora closed her eyes. "He's in Nevada. At the facility. He's broadcasting from there." "Can you disrupt the broadcast?" "Maybe. If I have enough power." Alex joined her. "I can help. We can do it together." They stood side by side. Eyes glowing white. The Frequency pulsed. A wave of energy. It spread across the mountains. The controlled Receivers stopped. Their eyes cleared. They looked around. Confused. Lost. "What happened?" "You're free," Ethan said. "Marcus is gone. You're in control again." --- The battle was over. Marcus's attack had failed. But he was still out there. Still planning. Ethan walked through the community. Helping. Comforting. The controlled Receivers were being treated. Counseled. They were victims. Not enemies. General Harrison called that evening. "Marcus Webb has gone underground. I can't find him. But I will." "Thank you, General." "I told you. I'm not like Victor Cross. I want to protect your people." "Then help us. Not just with Marcus. With the future. There will be others. Others who want to use the Frequency. Weaponize it. Control it." Harrison was quiet for a moment. "I can't promise to protect you forever. But I can promise to try." --- The community recovered. Weeks passed. Months. Marcus Webb was still out there. Still hiding. But the community was stronger. More prepared. Ethan stood on the porch. Stared at the mountains. Nora joined him. "Marcus is still out there." "I know." "He's never going to stop. Not until we stop him." "Then we stop him. Together." Nora took his hand. "Together."
