The call came at 2:17 AM.
Ethan was already awake. He'd been restless all night, unable to shake the feeling that something was coming. Something bad. Something they weren't ready for.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand. Unknown number. He answered.
"Mr. Cole. This is Agent Cross. We have a situation."
"What kind of situation?"
"One of your people. A young woman named Maria. She's been taken."
Ethan's blood went cold. Maria. The first graduate. The one who had spoken at the ceremony. The one who had thanked him for believing in her.
"Taken by who?"
"We don't know. But she was last seen at her apartment in Billings. Witnesses reported a black van. No plates. No markings."
"Where is she now?"
"We're tracking the van. But we need your help. Her Frequency signal is fluctuating. She's scared. She's broadcasting."
Ethan was already out of bed. "Send me the coordinates. I'm on my way."
---
Ethan gathered the team.
Liam. Charlotte. Sonya. Nora. Alex. Derek.
"Maria has been taken. Unknown assailants. We need to find her."
"Could it be Marcus's people?" Liam asked.
"Marcus is in custody. This is something else."
"Or someone else," Charlotte said. "Someone who wants to hurt us. Someone who wants to send a message."
Ethan grabbed his jacket. "Then we send one back."
---
They drove through the night.
The coordinates led to an industrial area outside Billings. Abandoned warehouses. Empty streets. The perfect place for a kidnapping.
Derek tracked Maria's Frequency signal.
"She's in the third building. East side. Second floor."
"Any guards?"
"Six. Armed. No insignia."
Sonya checked her weapon. "We go in quiet. Take them out before they know we're here."
"No," Ethan said. "We go in loud. They know we're coming. They want us to come. We don't give them the advantage."
---
They approached the building.
The front door was open. Inviting. A trap.
Ethan walked through. The others followed.
The building was empty. Dark. Dusty.
A voice echoed from the upper floor.
"Ethan Cole. I've been expecting you."
Ethan recognized the voice. Cold. Calculated.
"Dr. Elara Vance. I thought you were on our side."
"I am on the side of the Frequency. Not you. Not the community."
She stepped out of the shadows. Her eyes were hard. Her face was cold.
"Maria was a distraction. I knew you'd come."
"Where is she?"
"Safe. For now. But she won't stay safe unless you do what I say."
---
Elara Vance had been working with Marcus. Not against him. The entire time.
"I helped you destroy his facilities," Ethan said. "I trusted you."
"You trusted me because I showed you what you wanted to see. I told you Marcus was building a Frequency bomb. I told you where to find him. I helped you capture him."
"Because you wanted him out of the way."
"Marcus was a visionary. But he was also a liability. He was too focused on revenge. He couldn't see the bigger picture."
"What bigger picture?"
Elara stepped closer. "The Frequency is the future. And the future belongs to the Receivers. Not to the government. Not to Marcus. Not to you."
"So you want to take over the world?"
"I want to create a world where Receivers are in control. Where we don't have to hide. Where we don't have to ask permission to exist."
She held up a device. A Frequency emitter. Like the ones Marcus had built.
"This device can amplify the Frequency. Make every Receiver in a thousand miles stronger. More powerful. More connected."
"And what about the non-Receivers?"
"They will adapt. Or they will be left behind. Evolution is not always comfortable."
---
Ethan stepped forward. "Elara. Listen to yourself. You're talking about enslaving people. Taking away their free will."
"I'm talking about giving people purpose. The Frequency is a gift. A gift that humanity has been too scared to accept."
"Chimera said the same thing. Look what happened."
"Chimera was hungry. I am not hungry. I am determined."
She pressed a button on the emitter.
The building hummed. The Frequency spiked.
Nora stumbled. Clutched her head.
Alex cried out. His eyes glowed white.
The Receivers in the community—hundreds of miles away—would be feeling the same thing.
"Stop this," Ethan said. "Now."
"I can't stop it. Only you can."
She pointed at Ethan.
"Your Frequency is the strongest I've ever seen. You can override the emitter. But it will kill you."
---
Ethan stared at the emitter.
"Your mother gave her life to protect you," Elara said. "You can give your life to protect them."
"You're insane."
"Maybe. But I'm also right."
Nora grabbed Ethan's arm. "Don't listen to her. There's another way."
"There's no other way."
Alex stepped forward. "Let me do it. I can override the emitter. I'm the anchor. I'm connected to the fragments."
"You'll die," Nora said.
"Maybe. But the community will live."
Ethan looked at his son. His brave, brave son.
"No," he said. "I won't let you."
---
Elara laughed. "How noble. Both of you willing to sacrifice yourselves. But only one of you can do it."
She held up the emitter.
"I've been planning this for years. I've been waiting for the right moment. The right person. The right sacrifice."
She looked at Ethan.
"Your father died to protect you. Marcus died to protect his work. Everyone you love has died for something. Now it's your turn."
Ethan thought about his mother. His father. Nora. Alex. The community. Everything he'd fought for.
"Let Maria go. Let everyone go. And I'll do what you want."
Elara smiled. "Agreed."
---
She made a call. The guards released Maria. She was led out of the building, confused and shaken.
Ethan walked toward the emitter.
"Ethan, no," Nora said.
"I have to."
"There's another way."
"There's no other way."
He touched the emitter.
The Frequency surged. White light exploded from his hands.
Ethan felt it. The Frequency. The connection. The power.
He pushed it back. Harder. Harder.
The emitter cracked. Flickered. Died.
Elara screamed. "What have you done?"
"I saved them."
Elara lunged forward. Liam intercepted her. Pinned her to the ground.
"Get her out of here," Ethan said.
---
The building was quiet.
The Frequency was stable.
Ethan leaned against the wall. His legs were weak. His heart was pounding.
Nora was beside him. "You're alive."
"I'm alive."
"How?"
"I don't know."
Alex walked over. "The fragments helped you. They connected to the emitter. Redirected the Frequency."
"You did this?"
"We did this. Together."
---
Elara Vance was taken into custody.
The government was notified. The partnership would continue.
But the trust was broken. The community had been tested. And they had survived.
Ethan stood on the porch. Stared at the stars.
Nora joined him.
"Maria is safe," she said. "The community is safe. Everything is okay."
"Elara is in custody. But there will be others. Others who want to use the Frequency. Others who want to control it."
"Then we'll be ready."
Ethan looked at her. "Will we?"
"We always have been."
