The New Signal

1442 Words
Three months passed. The farmhouse became a headquarters. Ethan converted the barn into an office. Computers. Maps. Frequency monitors. Derek visited twice a week. Updated the software. Patched the network. Sonya ran security. Trained Liam and Charlotte in close-quarters defense. Richard's health stabilized. The coma damage was permanent, but manageable. He walked with a cane. Drank less coffee. Slept more. Elena recovered fully. Her Frequency was quiet. No whispers. No static. The specialist in Seattle called it a miracle. Nora declined. Slowly. Invisibly to strangers. But Ethan saw it. Her white eyes dimmed. Her steps slowed. She slept twelve hours a day. "The anchor's destruction bought me time," she said. "But not enough." "How much?" "A year. Maybe less." Ethan refused to accept it. He called specialists. Researchers. Anyone who'd studied the Frequency. Most hung up when he mentioned Chimera. A few listened. None had answers. --- The first new signal came on a Tuesday. Derek's monitors beeped. A Frequency spike in Montana. Weak. Brief. Then gone. "Could be nothing," Derek said. "Or it could be Chimera, testing." Ethan pulled up a map. Montana. Remote. Mountains. "Any facilities there?" "None on Marcus's list. But Marcus didn't know everything." Nora walked in. Stared at the monitor. "It's not Chimera. It's a Receiver. Newly awakened. Scared." "Can you talk to them?" "Too far. But I can feel them. They're alone. No one to explain what's happening." Ethan grabbed his jacket. "Then we go." --- The drive took fourteen hours. Liam drove. Charlotte navigated. Ethan sat in the back with Nora. The Montana landscape was vast. Mountains. Forests. Rivers. The Frequency spike originated near a small town called Haven. Population: three hundred. Ethan had never heard of it. They arrived at dusk. The town was quiet. Main street. A diner. A church. Derek had traced the signal to an address on the edge of town. A farmhouse. Smaller than theirs. White paint peeling. Ethan knocked. A woman opened the door. Thirties. Dark hair. Tired eyes. "You're the ones who've been calling?" "We've been looking for you." "Why?" "Because you're a Receiver. And you need help." The woman stared. Then stepped aside. "Come in." --- Her name was Sarah. She'd lived in Haven her whole life. Married. Divorced. No children. The Frequency started three weeks ago. Whispers. Static. Dreams of a cave. "I thought I was going crazy," she said. "Went to a doctor. He said it was stress." "It's not stress." Ethan explained. The Facility. Marcus. Chimera. Sarah listened. Didn't interrupt. When he finished, she was crying. "I'm not crazy." "You're not crazy. You're a Receiver. And you're not alone." Nora stepped forward. Touched Sarah's forehead. White light pulsed. Sarah's eyes flickered. Then returned to normal. "The Frequency is quiet now," Nora said. "I dampened it. But it will come back." "What do I do?" "Learn to control it. Like I did." Sarah looked at Ethan. "Will you teach me?" "We'll find someone who can." --- They stayed the night. Sarah made dinner. Soup. Bread. Coffee. Liam checked the perimeter. No threats. Charlotte called Richard. Updated him. Ethan sat on the porch. Stared at the stars. Nora joined him. "There will be more like her. Hundreds. Thousands." "I know." "The facilities are closed, but the Receivers are still out there. Alone. Scared." "Then we find them. Build a network. A support system." Nora leaned against him. "You're building an army." "I'm building a family." --- The next morning, they drove to Billings. A clinic. Dr. Yuki Tanaka. One of the researchers who'd listened. She was in her forties. Short. Intense. "I've studied the Frequency for twelve years," she said. "Off the books. Marcus knew about my work. He tried to recruit me. I refused." "Why?" "Because he wanted to weaponize it. I wanted to heal it." Dr. Tanaka examined Sarah. Ran tests. Monitored her brain waves. "Her Frequency pattern is stable. Similar to Nora's. But weaker." "Can you teach her to control it?" "Maybe. It takes time. Practice. Some Receivers never learn." Sarah nodded. "I want to try." "Then stay here. I have a small facility. Safe. Private." Ethan looked at Nora. She nodded. "Sarah stays." --- They returned to the farmhouse. More signals came. Washington. Oregon. Idaho. Derek tracked them. Categorized them. "Weak. Moderate. Strong." "Any as strong as Nora?" "One. In California. Near Big Sur." Ethan's blood went cold. "Ross's estate?" "No. Different location. A coastal town. Name's Mendocino." "Then we go." --- The drive was long. Nora slept most of the way. Charlotte drove. Liam watched the road. Ethan stared out the window. The static in his head was back. Faint. But there. You cannot save them all. "I can try." You will exhaust yourself. Break yourself. For what? "For them." They will not thank you. They will fear you. Reject you. "Maybe. But I'll still try." The static faded. Chimera was learning. So was Ethan. --- Mendocino was beautiful. Cliffs. Ocean. Fog. The signal came from a lighthouse. Converted into a home. Ethan knocked. A man opened the door. Sixties. Gray beard. Weather-beaten face. "You're the one who's been calling." "Yes." "Come in." His name was Thomas. A former fisherman. Retired. The Frequency started two months ago. "Thought I was having a stroke," he said. "Went to the hospital. They said I was fine." "You're not fine. You're a Receiver." Thomas laughed. "A what?" Ethan explained. Thomas listened. Then poured himself a drink. "So there's a voice in my head. Been there for thousands of years. Wants to take over the world." "Essentially." "And you want to teach me how to block it out." "We want to teach you how to live with it." Thomas drank. "When do we start?" --- Nora worked with Thomas for three days. His Frequency was strong. Unstable. But he learned quickly. "The key is acceptance," Nora said. "Don't fight the static. Let it flow through you. Then push it back." Thomas closed his eyes. The lighthouse lights flickered. Then steadied. "I think I've got it." "You've got it." Thomas opened his eyes. "What now?" "Now you help others. Teach them. The way I taught you." "I'm not a teacher." "Neither was I." --- They returned to the farmhouse. More Receivers came. A stream. Then a flood. Ethan converted the barn into a dormitory. Charlotte managed logistics. Food. Beds. Schedules. Liam trained volunteers. Security. Self-defense. Sonya ran background checks. Kept out spies. Infiltrators. Derek built a communication network. Secure. Encrypted. Richard taught. Science. History. The nature of the Frequency. Elena counseled. Trauma. Loss. Fear. Nora trained. One Receiver at a time. And Ethan led. --- Months passed. The network grew. Hundreds of Receivers. Then thousands. They called themselves the Frequency Collective. Not a facility. Not a prison. A community. Dr. Tanaka joined. Brought her clinic. Her research. Sarah became a teacher. Thomas became a mentor. New leaders emerged. Strong. Compassionate. Chimera's whispers faded. Not gone. Just quieter. You are building something beautiful, the voice said one night. I will destroy it. "You can try." --- The attack came on a Sunday. No warning. No signal. A Receiver in Oregon. Young. Twenty-two. Name was Jacob. Chimera possessed him. Made him drive to Portland. Walk into a crowded square. Begin broadcasting. The Frequency spiked. People collapsed. Seizures. Hallucinations. Seven dead before Jacob was subdued. Ethan got the call at 3 AM. "How bad?" "Bad. The media is calling it a mass hysteria event. But we know the truth." "Where's Jacob now?" "Sedated. Dr. Tanaka is with him." "I'm on my way." --- The drive was silent. Liam drove. Charlotte sat in back. Nora stayed at the farmhouse. Too weak. Ethan stared out the window. You see? Chimera whispered. I can reach anyone. Anywhere. You cannot protect them all. "Then I'll protect the ones I can." They will hate you. Blame you. You brought me into their heads. "You were already there. I just showed them the truth." The voice went silent. But Ethan knew it wasn't defeated. It was regrouping. --- Portland was chaos. News trucks. Police tape. Crowds. Dr. Tanaka met them at the clinic. "Jacob is stable. But the Frequency damaged his brain. He may never fully recover." "Can he talk?" "Barely." Ethan entered the room. Jacob lay on a bed. Tubes in his arms. Monitors beeping. His eyes were open. White. "Jacob. Can you hear me?" A nod. "Chimera used you. Made you a weapon. That's not your fault." Tears rolled down Jacob's cheeks. "I'm going to find Chimera. I'm going to stop it. But I need your help." Jacob's hand twitched. Ethan took it. "Where is Chimera now?" Jacob's mouth opened. A whisper. "Everywhere."
