Echoes

The farmhouse felt smaller now. Too many people. Too much pain. Too many secrets. Ethan sat on the porch steps. Stared at the tree line. The static in his head was gone. For the first time in days, silence. But silence wasn't peace. It was waiting. --- Richard slept in the bedroom. Elena rested beside him. Liam stood guard by the window. His face was still swollen. His eye was still half-closed. But he stood straight. Alert. Nora sat on the couch. Her white eyes were dim. Flickering. "Chimera is quiet," she said. "Trapped?" "Weakened. Not gone. The machine was a lock. Not a cage." Ethan turned. "What does that mean?" "It means Chimera can still reach out. Still whisper. Still try to find a way free." "But without the machine, it can't escape." "Can't escape easily. There are other machines. Other facilities. Marcus wasn't the only one studying the Frequency." Charlotte walked in. Carried a laptop. Derek's laptop. "I found files. On the Facility network. Before Derek locked me out." She opened the laptop. Showed Ethan the screen. A list. Locations. Dates. Facilities like Mendel. All over the world. "Marcus built this network," Charlotte said. "He's been recruiting Receivers for decades. Sending them to these places. Studying them." "Studying them or using them?" "Both." Ethan scrolled through the list. Twelve facilities. Twelve directors. Hundreds of Receivers. A global operation. "Marcus didn't tell me any of this." "Marcus didn't tell anyone. He kept it secret. Even from Amelia." --- The door opened. Sonya walked in. Marcus behind her. His hands were cuffed. His face was gray. "I want to talk," Marcus said. "Then talk." Marcus sat on a chair. Stared at the floor. "The facilities. All of them. They're still operational. Directors waiting for orders." "What orders?" "The ones I never gave. Because I never found the right Receiver. Until you." Marcus looked at Ethan. "Chimera chose you. Not me. Not Nora. You. The voice has been calling to you since you were seven years old." "And you wanted to use me to free it." "I wanted to free it because it promised me something. Everyone it touches, it promises something. Power. Immortality. Love." "What did it promise you?" Marcus's voice cracked. "My daughter. She died thirty years ago. Leukemia. Chimera showed me visions of her. Growing up. Getting married. Having children." His eyes filled with tears. "It said if I freed it, it would bring her back." Ethan felt something cold settle in his chest. "Chimera lied." "I know. I've always known. But the visions were so real. Her laugh. Her smile. I could almost touch her." Marcus wiped his eyes. "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I'm asking for a chance to make things right." "How?" "The facilities. I can shut them down. Contact the directors. Tell them the project is over." "And the Receivers?" "Released. Given medical care. Counseling. Whatever they need." Ethan looked at Nora. She nodded. "He's telling the truth. For now." "Do it," Ethan said. "But if you try anything—" "I won't." Sonya uncuffed him. Marcus pulled out his phone. Started making calls. --- The afternoon passed slowly. Ethan helped Liam clear the kitchen. Wash dishes. Sweep floors. Small tasks. Mindless. Richard woke up. Ate soup. Drank water. His color was better. His hands were steadier. "We need to talk," Richard said. Ethan sat beside his father's bed. "About what?" "About you. The Frequency. What happens now." "I don't know what happens now." "I do. You're going to keep hearing it. The static. The whispers. Chimera is weakened, but it's still there. Still calling." "How do I make it stop?" "You don't. You learn to live with it. The way Nora does. The way I did." Richard reached for Ethan's hand. "You're not alone anymore. You have Nora. Elena. Liam. Charlotte." "And you." "And me. For as long as I have left." Ethan's throat tightened. "The doctors said the coma damaged my organs. Kidneys. Liver. I have months. Maybe less." "No. We'll find treatment. Specialists." "The only specialist who understood my condition was Marcus. And I don't trust him with my life." Richard smiled. "I've had a good run, Ethan. I discovered something amazing. I helped people. I raised a son who's braver than I ever was." He squeezed Ethan's hand. "That's enough." --- Evening came. Nora stood on the porch. Stared at the stars. Ethan joined her. "You can see them," he said. "The stars. Even with your eyes." "I see everything. Frequencies. Colors. Sounds. The world is louder for me." "Is that why you're sad?" Nora looked at him. "I'm sad because I've never been outside before. Not really. The Facility had a courtyard. Fences. Mesh. But this..." She spread her arms. "This is sky. Real sky. Open. Infinite." "You'll see more. After we shut down the facilities. After we free the other Receivers." Nora shook her head. "I won't be here, Ethan. My body is failing. The experiments. The tests. I told you. Maybe a year. Maybe less." "Then we make that year count." "How?" "We find a way to slow the damage. Treatments. Therapies. There are doctors who study the Frequency. People who aren't Marcus." Nora was quiet. "You remind me of your father. He promised me the same thing. Years ago. 'We'll find a cure, Nora. We'll save you.'" "Did you believe him?" "I wanted to." Nora touched Ethan's face. "I want to believe you too." --- At midnight, Marcus finished his calls. "All twelve directors have agreed to shut down. The Receivers will be transferred to legitimate hospitals within the week." "And the evidence?" Ethan asked. "On this." Marcus held up a hard drive. "Every file. Every recording. Every experiment. Enough to put me in prison for the rest of my life." "What do you want me to do with it?" "Whatever you think is right." Ethan took the hard drive. "I'll hold onto it. For now." Marcus nodded. "Fair enough." Sonya stepped forward. "I'm leaving. Going back to my life. Derek is already gone." "You helped us in the end," Ethan said. "That counts for something." "It counts for nothing. I was paid to protect Marcus. I failed." She walked out the door. The car started. Drove away. --- The night grew cold. Ethan sat alone in the kitchen. The hard drive was on the table. The laptop was open. He could send the files to every news outlet. Destroy Marcus. Destroy the Facility. Destroy everything. But destroying things was easy. Building something new was hard. His father had spent his life studying the Frequency. Trying to understand it. Control it. He'd failed. But maybe understanding wasn't the goal. Maybe coexistence was. Nora walked in. Sat across from him. "What are you thinking?" "That I don't know what comes next." "None of us do. That's why we need each other." Nora pointed at the hard drive. "Destroy it. Not the evidence. The temptation. Marcus will face justice. But not through revenge. Through truth." Ethan picked up the hard drive. Walked to the fireplace. Threw it in. The plastic melted. The circuits sparked. The files were gone. "Was that wise?" Nora asked. "I don't know. But it was mine." --- Richard woke at 3 AM. Ethan was still awake. Still watching the fire. "Can't sleep?" "Can't stop thinking." "About?" "Chimera. The other facilities. The Receivers. What happens to all of them now." Richard sat up. Winced. "You can't save everyone, Ethan." "I can try." "Trying is good. Expecting to succeed is dangerous." Richard swung his legs over the side of the bed. "Your mother used to say that hope is a weapon. But only if you aim it carefully." "What did she mean?" "She meant that hoping for everything leads to despair. But hoping for one thing—one achievable thing—that's how you change the world." Ethan thought about this. "Then I hope we save the Receivers. One at a time." "That's a good hope." Richard stood. Walked to the window. "The sun will be up soon. New day. New beginning." "Does it feel like a beginning?" "It feels like one. Whether it is or not... that's up to us." --- The sun rose over the trees. Golden light. Birds singing. Ethan stood on the porch. Watched the sky turn from black to blue. Nora joined him. "The static is back," she said. "I know. Faint. But there." "Chimera is patient. It will wait. Try again." "Then we'll be ready." Nora smiled. "You sound like your father." "Is that bad?" "No. It's the highest compliment I can give." Liam walked out. Elena beside him. "We're leaving," Liam said. "Taking Elena to a doctor. Someone we trust." "Will you come back?" "When you need us." They hugged. Handshakes. Goodbyes. Charlotte stayed. Watching from the doorway. "I'm not going anywhere," she said. "Not until we finish this." "Finish what?" "Shutting down the facilities. Freeing the Receivers. Making sure Marcus pays." Ethan nodded. "Then let's get to work."
