HIDDEN HEARTS
EPISODE 7: THE STAGE IS SET
Presentation day arrived faster than Elena expected.
Too fast.
The classroom was arranged differently—chairs facing the front, projector already set up, and a quiet pressure hanging in the air like everyone was waiting for something to go wrong.
Elena Hart stood near the front, checking her notes one last time.
Jayden Cole stood beside her.
Calm on the outside.
But even he wasn’t as relaxed as usual.
Derek leaned against a desk at the back, whispering to another student. “This is going to be interesting.”
Mia gave Elena a small thumbs-up from her seat. “Don’t overthink it.”
Elena didn’t respond.
Because overthinking wasn’t the problem.
The audience was.
---
Mr. Daniels walked in. “You’re up.”
Silence fell instantly.
Elena stepped forward first.
Jayden followed.
They stood side by side in front of the class.
And that alone was enough to trigger whispers.
Elena started speaking.
Clear. Calm. Focused.
“We researched student pressure and social behavior in schools,” she began. “And how expectations affect performance and mental well-being.”
Her voice was steady.
But she could feel eyes on her.
Everywhere.
Jayden watched her for a second before taking over smoothly.
“And we found that most pressure doesn’t come from teachers,” he added. “It comes from students themselves.”
That got attention.
A few heads lifted.
Elena continued when he stopped.
They passed the speaking naturally—like they had practiced more than they actually had.
Because somehow… they worked well together.
Too well.
---
But then it happened.
A voice from the back.
“Is this project about you two or the topic?”
Laughter spread through the room.
Elena froze for half a second.
Jayden’s expression tightened slightly.
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he stepped forward slightly.
“It’s about the topic,” he said calmly. “If you were listening, you’d know that.”
The room quieted.
Elena glanced at him briefly.
He wasn’t smiling anymore.
---
The presentation ended successfully.
Too successfully.
Applause followed, but Elena barely heard it.
She just wanted to sit down.
When they returned to their seats, Mia immediately leaned toward her.
“You were amazing,” she whispered.
Elena nodded faintly. “It’s over.”
But it didn’t feel over.
Not fully.
Because the stares were still there.
And worse—
So was the attention.
---
After class, Elena gathered her things quickly.
She wanted out.
But before she could leave, Jayden stopped beside her desk.
“They’re not stopping,” he said quietly.
Elena sighed. “They never do.”
Jayden studied her for a second.
Then said something lower, more serious.
“Let them talk. It doesn’t change anything.”
Elena looked up. “It does for me.”
That made him pause.
Not because he didn’t understand.
But because he did.
A silence passed between them.
Then Jayden spoke again.
“I’ll deal with it,” he said.
Elena shook her head slightly. “You don’t have to fix everything.”
“I know,” he replied.
A beat.
Then softer—
“I just don’t like seeing you deal with it alone.”
That sentence landed differently.
Elena didn’t respond immediately.
Because no one had ever said something like that to her before.
Not like it mattered.
Not like it was personal.
She finally looked away. “I’m used to it.”
Jayden didn’t like that answer.
But he didn’t argue.
Instead, he just nodded once.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “I can tell.”
Then he left.
---
Elena stood there for a moment longer than she meant to.
Because something about today didn’t feel like a normal school day anymore.
And something about him…
Was starting to feel harder to ignore.
