HIDDEN HEARTS
EPISODE 8: UNEXPECTED DEFENSE
The next morning felt heavier than usual.
Not because anything new had happened.
But because something had stayed behind.
Elena Hart walked through the hallway with her usual quiet steps, but she could feel it immediately.
The stares were still there.
The whispers hadn’t gone away after the presentation.
If anything, they had grown.
“She and Jayden are definitely close…”
“I saw them standing together again…”
“It’s giving something…”
Elena exhaled softly and kept walking.
She had learned not to react.
Reacting only made it worse.
---
“Morning,” Mia said, catching up to her. But even Mia’s tone wasn’t as playful today.
Elena glanced at her. “Don’t start.”
“I didn’t say anything,” Mia replied quickly.
“You were going to.”
Mia sighed. “Okay fine… people are really pushing the whole ‘you and Jayden’ thing.”
Elena stopped walking. “It’s annoying.”
“That’s not the problem,” Mia said carefully. “The problem is… some of them are not just talking anymore.”
Elena frowned slightly. “What does that mean?”
Mia hesitated.
Then lowered her voice. “They’re saying things about you.”
Elena’s expression didn’t change.
But something in her eyes did.
“What kind of things?”
Mia looked away. “You know how people are.”
Elena nodded slowly.
Yes.
She knew.
---
Across the courtyard, Jayden Cole stood with Derek.
But this time, he wasn’t smiling.
Derek noticed immediately. “Okay, what’s wrong with you today?”
Jayden didn’t answer right away.
His eyes were fixed across the yard.
On her.
Elena was walking alone again.
Derek followed his gaze and sighed. “Don’t tell me you’re still thinking about yesterday.”
“I’m not,” Jayden said automatically.
Derek raised an eyebrow. “That was fast denial again.”
Jayden ignored him.
But then—
A group of students nearby laughed loudly.
Too loudly.
“Imagine thinking Jayden would actually be interested in her,” one of them said.
Another voice joined in. “She probably forced it for attention.”
Jayden stopped walking.
Derek noticed instantly. “Yo—Jayden?”
But Jayden had already turned.
---
Elena was near the corridor when it happened.
She didn’t even realize the voices were about her at first.
Until they got closer.
“Honestly, she’s always been invisible for a reason.”
“She just got lucky with the project.”
“People like her don’t belong in his space.”
Elena’s fingers tightened slightly around her bag.
But she didn’t react.
She never did.
Then—
“Enough.”
The voice cut through everything.
Clear. Sharp. Final.
The group turned.
Jayden Cole stood a few steps away.
His expression was different now.
Not calm.
Not casual.
Serious.
“What did you just say?” he asked.
Silence followed immediately.
One of the students laughed nervously. “We were just joking—”
“Doesn’t sound like a joke,” Jayden interrupted.
His eyes moved across each of them.
Cold enough to shut them up completely.
Then he added, quieter but stronger:
“Apologize.”
No one spoke.
Not until one of them finally muttered, “Sorry…”
Jayden didn’t respond.
He just turned and walked away.
---
Elena had seen everything.
But she hadn’t moved.
She stood still in the corridor long after the group left.
Because for the first time…
Someone had spoken up.
For her.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
But clearly.
And that changed something she couldn’t explain.
---
Later that day, she found him outside the classroom.
“You didn’t have to do that,” she said.
Jayden leaned against the wall slightly. “Yeah, I did.”
Elena studied him. “Why?”
He paused.
That question seemed to sit heavier than the others.
Then he answered honestly.
“Because I didn’t like what they were saying.”
A beat.
Elena nodded slowly. “It’s normal for me.”
Jayden looked at her immediately. “That’s not normal.”
Her gaze dropped slightly.
He continued, softer now:
“You shouldn’t be used to it.”
Silence.
Not uncomfortable.
Just real.
Then the bell rang in the distance.
But neither of them moved yet.
Because something had shifted again.
And this time…
It wasn’t just the rumors.
