After The Bell Rings

HIDDEN HEARTS EPISODE 3: AFTER THE BELL RINGS The final bell echoed through St. Aurelian High, signaling freedom. Students rushed out of classrooms almost immediately—chairs scraping, voices rising, footsteps fading into the hallways like waves breaking and disappearing. But Elena Hart stayed seated. So did Jayden Cole. The classroom slowly emptied until only the soft hum of the ceiling fan remained. Elena stared at her notes, even though she wasn’t really reading them anymore. Staying behind after school wasn’t unusual for her. But staying behind with someone else… was. Jayden stretched his arms slightly before leaning back in his chair. “So this is what quiet feels like.” Elena glanced at him. “You don’t like quiet?” “I’m not used to it,” he admitted. That answer surprised her a little. She expected confidence. Maybe even arrogance. But not that. Elena turned a page in her notebook. “We should decide how we’re dividing the work.” Jayden nodded. “Okay. You’re clearly the brains, so I’ll follow your lead.” Elena paused. “That was not a compliment.” “It was,” he said casually. “Just not a dramatic one.” She didn’t respond immediately. People usually didn’t talk to her like that—like she was simply… normal. After a moment, she pointed at her notes. “We’ll research separately. Then combine it.” “Efficient,” Jayden said. “I like that.” “You like everything,” she replied without thinking. That made him laugh softly. It wasn’t loud or attention-seeking. Just real. Elena looked up for a second before quickly looking back down. They worked in silence after that. But it wasn’t the uncomfortable kind of silence. It was focused. Occasionally, Jayden would ask small questions. And Elena would answer without overthinking it. At some point, she realized he was actually listening. Not pretending. Not distracted. Listening. Minutes passed without either of them noticing. When Elena finally looked up again, the light outside had changed. The room was dimmer now, golden shadows stretching across the desks. “Everyone left,” she said quietly. Jayden checked his phone. “Yeah… guess we stayed too long.” Elena closed her notebook. “We can continue tomorrow.” He nodded and stood up. For a moment, neither of them moved toward the door. Then Jayden spoke again. “Hey.” Elena looked at him. He hesitated briefly, like he wasn’t used to saying what he was about to say. “You’re… not what I expected,” he said. Elena blinked. “Is that good or bad?” A small smile appeared on his face. “I haven’t decided yet.” That should’ve annoyed her. Instead, it stayed in her thoughts. They walked out of the classroom together. The hallway was almost empty now—quiet in a way the school never felt during the day. At the exit, Jayden stopped. “Elena,” he said. She turned slightly. “See you tomorrow.” She nodded once. “Yeah. Tomorrow.” And then he left. Elena stood there for a second longer than she meant to. Because something about that conversation didn’t feel like schoolwork anymore. It felt like the beginning of something she didn’t have a name for yet. And that was what made it dangerous.
