HIDDEN HEARTS
CHAPTER 4: SMALL MOMENTS, BIG MEANINGS
The next morning felt normal.
Too normal.
Students filled the hallways again with noise and movement, like nothing ever stayed the same for long at St. Aurelian High.
Elena Hart walked in quietly, adjusting her bag strap as she headed toward class.
But something felt slightly different.
She noticed it immediately.
Not people staring.
Not whispers.
Just… awareness.
Like she was no longer completely invisible.
“Over here!” Mia called, waving from their usual spot.
Elena sat down. “You’re loud this morning.”
“I have news,” Mia said quickly.
Elena sighed. “That usually means trouble.”
“It means interesting,” Mia corrected. Then she leaned closer. “You and Jayden stayed after school yesterday.”
Elena froze for half a second. “Who told you that?”
Mia smiled. “People talk.”
“They shouldn’t.”
“But they do.”
Elena looked away, focusing on her bag. “It was just a project.”
Mia raised an eyebrow. “That’s what they all say before it becomes something else.”
“It won’t,” Elena said quickly.
But even as she said it… she wasn’t sure why it sounded like she was trying to convince herself more than Mia.
---
Across the classroom, Jayden Cole walked in like usual.
Friends around him. Laughter following him.
But his mind wasn’t fully there.
Derek noticed immediately.
“You’re quiet,” Derek said as they took their seats.
“I’m normal,” Jayden replied.
“That’s not normal for you.”
Jayden didn’t respond.
Instead, his eyes briefly moved across the room.
And landed on her.
Elena was already writing in her notebook.
Focused.
Calm.
Unbothered.
But for some reason, he remembered yesterday more clearly than he should’ve.
The silence.
The conversation.
Her voice when she actually explained things without hesitation.
Derek followed his gaze and smirked. “Ohhh.”
Jayden immediately looked away. “Don’t start.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were about to.”
Derek laughed. “Relax. It’s just a project.”
But Jayden didn’t answer.
Because it didn’t feel like just a project anymore.
---
Later that day, during lunch break, Elena sat alone under the shade near the courtyard.
Or at least, she thought she would be alone.
“Mind if I sit?”
She looked up.
Jayden stood there, holding a tray, waiting.
Elena blinked. “You have friends.”
“I do,” he said. “They’re loud. I needed a break.”
That answer made no sense.
But somehow, it did.
She nodded slightly. “Okay.”
He sat across from her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Just the sound of distant laughter and wind moving through the trees.
Then Jayden broke the silence.
“You always sit alone?”
Elena didn’t look up. “Most of the time.”
“By choice?”
She hesitated. “By habit.”
Jayden studied her for a second. “That sounds lonely.”
Elena finally met his eyes. “It’s peaceful.”
He didn’t argue.
Instead, he nodded slowly like he was accepting something he didn’t fully understand.
A pause.
Then—
“You’re different outside class,” he said.
Elena frowned slightly. “What does that mean?”
“In class, you’re… distant. Here, you’re just… you.”
That made her go quiet.
Because no one had ever described her like that before.
Not like she was two different versions of herself.
Before she could respond, a group of students walked past, laughing loudly.
One of them slowed down slightly.
Looking at them.
Then whispering to another.
Elena noticed.
Of course she did.
Jayden didn’t.
Or maybe he did—but ignored it.
He stood up first. “I should go.”
Elena nodded. “Okay.”
He hesitated for a second.
Then added, “See you in class, Elena.”
And walked away.
Elena stayed seated longer than necessary.
Because something about that moment… didn’t feel small at all.
Even if it was.
