When Fate Chooses Partners

HIDDEN HEARTS EPISODE 2: WHEN FATE CHOOSES PARTNERS The classroom buzzed with restless energy. Students talked over each other, chairs scraped loudly against the floor, and notebooks opened with dramatic sighs. It was the kind of noise that made concentration feel impossible. Elena Hart sat quietly at her desk, already expecting chaos. She wasn’t wrong. Mr. Daniels walked in with a folder under his arm and clapped once. “Settle down. You’ll all be working on a term project.” Groans filled the room instantly. Elena lowered her gaze to her notebook. Group work meant noise, opinions, and unnecessary stress. She preferred silence. “Pairs will be assigned randomly,” Mr. Daniels continued. That made things worse. Pens tapped nervously. Chairs shifted. Students whispered prayers or complaints under their breath. Elena stayed still. Then the list began. Names were called one after another. Until— “Elena Hart… and Jayden Cole.” For a moment, the room didn’t react. Then it did. Low whispers spread immediately. Elena’s fingers paused on her pen. Across the room, Jayden lifted his head. It was the first time that day his expression changed. Not shock exactly. But interest. Mia turned slightly toward Elena, her eyebrows raised. “No way.” Elena didn’t respond. She just watched as Jayden stood up. He moved toward her table with calm steps, hands in his pockets, like nothing about this assignment was unusual. Like being paired with her meant nothing. He stopped beside her desk. “This seat taken?” he asked lightly, even though it obviously wasn’t. Elena looked up at him. “You already sat.” A small smile appeared on his face. “Good observation.” He sat down. Silence settled between them. Not uncomfortable—but unfamiliar. Jayden leaned back slightly in his chair. “So… what’s your strength in group work?” Elena blinked. “I usually do the work.” He nodded slowly. “Honest answer.” “That wasn’t a joke.” “I know,” he said, still smiling a little. Elena looked away first. She didn’t like how easily he made conversations feel… different. After a moment, Jayden tapped his pen against the desk. “So what are we doing?” “We choose a topic,” she said. “Something simple.” “Simple sounds boring,” he replied. “It also sounds manageable,” she countered. That made him pause. Then he nodded. “Alright. Manageable.” For a few seconds, they didn’t speak. Then Elena pushed her notebook slightly toward him. He glanced at it. “Student pressure and social behavior in schools,” he read. His expression changed slightly. “That’s… actually good.” Elena studied him. “You sound surprised.” “I am,” he admitted. That honesty caught her off guard. Jayden looked at her properly now, not like he was used to being the center of attention—but like he was actually paying attention to her. “Let’s do it,” he said. And just like that, something shifted. Not loud. Not obvious. But real.
