HIDDEN HEARTS EPISODE 16: THE WORDS HE DIDN’T SAY The hallway felt different after what Elena heard. Because there’s already someone else. Those words didn’t leave her mind. They repeated. Again. And again. Like they were trying to become real. Elena sat in class, staring at her notebook without actually seeing it. The teacher’s voice sounded far away, like it was coming through water. Mia leaned closer. “You’ve been weird all morning.” “I’m fine,” Elena replied quickly. Mia raised an eyebrow. “That was too fast to be fine.” Elena didn’t answer. Because if she opened her mouth, she might say something stupid. Something hopeful. And hope… was dangerous. --- At lunch, Sophia was once again surrounded by people. But today felt different. She wasn’t smiling as much. Her eyes kept shifting toward the entrance of the cafeteria. Like she was waiting for something. Or someone. Elena noticed it. And she hated that she noticed it. Mia followed her gaze. “You’re doing it again.” “I’m not doing anything.” “You’re watching her.” “I’m not.” Mia sighed. “Elena, denial is becoming your personality at this point.” Elena stood up immediately. “I’m going to the library.” But she didn’t go to the library. Not really. Her legs just… walked. And before she realized it, she was near the courtyard. Where voices drifted through the open doors. One of them was unmistakable. Jayden. --- She stopped. Hidden partially behind the hallway corner, she could see them. Jayden and Sophia. Talking. Not laughing. Not flirting. Just… serious. Sophia crossed her arms. “You shouldn’t have said that.” Jayden looked away slightly. “I said what was necessary.” “That wasn’t necessary. That was confusing.” A pause. Then Sophia spoke again, softer this time. “You know people will start assuming things again.” “I don’t care about people,” Jayden said. That made Sophia silent. For a moment. Then she asked carefully, “Then who do you care about?” Elena’s breath caught. Jayden didn’t answer immediately. And that silence… felt heavier than words. --- Inside the hallway, Elena’s fingers tightened around her books. She shouldn’t be listening. She knew that. But she couldn’t move. Jayden finally spoke. “I already told you,” he said quietly. “There’s someone else.” Sophia studied him. Then gave a small, knowing smile. “And she knows?” Jayden didn’t respond. That was the answer. --- Elena stepped back immediately. Her heart was beating too fast. Too loud. Too messy. She turned away before either of them could notice her. And walked quickly. Almost too quickly. --- That evening, Mia caught up with her outside the school gate. “You’re running again,” Mia said. “I’m walking.” “You’re escaping.” Elena stopped. Silence stretched between them. Then she whispered, “What if I’m not the one he means?” Mia frowned. “What?” Elena looked down. “What if I misunderstood everything?” Mia didn’t laugh. Didn’t tease. For once, she was serious. “Then you ask him,” she said simply. Elena shook her head immediately. “I can’t.” “Why?” Because I’m scared of the answer. But she didn’t say that. --- That night, Elena couldn’t sleep. She kept replaying everything. Sophia’s smile. Jayden’s silence. His words. There’s already someone else. But the worst part wasn’t confusion. It was something else. Hope. And it was growing. Against her will. --- The next morning, the school buzzed with new energy. Because posters had gone up in the hallway. WINTER DANCE — SATURDAY'S NIGHT Elena stopped in front of one. Her reflection faintly showed on the glossy paper. And for the first time, she noticed something in her own eyes. Not confusion. Not fear. But decision. --- Behind her, footsteps approached. She didn’t turn. Because she already knew who it was. Jayden spoke softly. “Did you see it?” Elena nodded slowly. A pause. Then she finally turned around. Their eyes met. And this time… she didn’t look away. --- “I need to ask you something,” Elena said quietly. Jayden’s expression shifted slightly. “Go ahead.” Her hands tightened. Her voice almost broke. But she asked anyway. “Who is the girl you meant?” The hallway went silent. Even the air felt like it stopped moving. Jayden looked at her. And for the first time… he didn’t answer immediately. --- TO BE CONTINUED…
