A Feeling Without A Name

HIDDEN HEARTS EPISODE 11: THE SCHOOL FESTIVAL Excitement filled the halls of St. Aurelian High. For the first time in weeks, students were talking about something other than classes, exams, or rumors. The annual school festival was only three days away. Colorful posters covered the walls. Teachers discussed preparations. Students rushed from one club meeting to another. Even Elena noticed the change in atmosphere. "You're helping with the literature booth," Mia announced as they walked to class. Elena frowned. "I never agreed to that." "You do now." "Mia." "No excuses." Elena sighed. This was exactly why she never volunteered for anything. People volunteered her instead. --- At lunch, the principal made an announcement. Every student participating in the festival would be assigned a partner. Groans echoed throughout the cafeteria. The list would be posted after school. Immediately, students began making predictions. Elena ignored all of it. Until Mia suddenly grabbed her arm. "The list is up!" Before Elena could protest, Mia dragged her toward the notice board. A crowd had already gathered. Students pushed forward, searching for their names. Elena finally found hers. Then froze. Festival Booth Coordinators: Elena Hart Jayden Cole Her heart dropped. "Again?" she whispered. Beside her, Mia was trying very hard not to laugh. "Oh, this is incredible." Elena covered her face. "Why does this keep happening?" --- Across the hallway, Jayden stared at the same list. Derek looked over his shoulder. Then burst out laughing. "No way." Jayden groaned. "Don't." "This school ships you two harder than the students do." "It's a coincidence." "Sure." Jayden shook his head. But secretly, he wasn't entirely upset. --- The next afternoon, preparations began. The literature booth was located near the center of the festival grounds. Boxes of books, decorations, and banners were scattered everywhere. Elena arrived early. She expected to work alone. Instead, she found Jayden already there. Holding a roll of tape. Looking completely confused. "You don't know what you're doing, do you?" Elena asked. Jayden looked relieved. "Thank goodness you're here." Despite herself, Elena laughed. "What happened?" "I put up one banner." "Okay." "It fell." "That's normal." "It fell on a teacher." Elena stared at him. Jayden rubbed the back of his neck. "It was an accident." For a moment, she tried to stay serious. Then she failed completely and laughed again. Jayden smiled. He liked hearing that sound. Maybe more than he should. --- Hours passed as they worked. They arranged books. Designed signs. Moved tables. Argued over decorations. And somehow enjoyed themselves. For once, there were no rumors. No misunderstandings. No awkward silences. Just two people spending time together. --- As the sun began to set, they carried the final box across the field. Elena was tired. Her arms hurt. Her feet hurt. Everything hurt. Suddenly, she tripped on a loose stone. The box slipped from her hands. Before she could hit the ground, someone caught her arm. Strong fingers wrapped around her wrist. Steadying her. Elena looked up. Jayden. For a second, neither of them moved. The world seemed strangely quiet. "You okay?" he asked softly. Elena nodded. But her heart was racing. And she wasn't sure it was because she almost fell. Slowly, Jayden let go. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them knew what to say. Because something about that moment felt different. Important. Dangerous. --- That night, Elena lay awake in bed. Staring at the ceiling. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the way Jayden had looked at her. The way he had held her arm. The concern in his voice. And for the first time, she stopped trying to deny it. Maybe Mia wasn't wrong. Maybe this wasn't just friendship anymore. Maybe her heart had already chosen. And maybe that was the most frightening thing of all.
