Chapter Six: The Name Beneath the Ink

735 Words
Nobody spoke. The photograph remained on the table. Four students. One library. One hidden camera. One message. YOU WERE WARNED. Olivia's heart hammered against her ribs as she stared at the image. The picture had been taken only moments ago. Which meant whoever was watching them had been close. Very close. Lucas immediately moved toward the library windows. "There's nobody out there." Harper folded her arms tightly. "That doesn't make this any less creepy." Noah leaned over the table. "Look at the timestamp." Everyone looked. The photograph wasn't taken from outside. It was taken from inside the library. Silence crashed over the group. Olivia felt her blood run cold. Someone had been inside with them. Watching. Listening. Waiting. And they hadn't noticed. Ethan's jaw tightened. "We need to leave." "For once, I agree," Harper muttered. The group quickly gathered their belongings. But before they could leave, Ava suddenly froze. Her eyes were locked on the back of the photograph. "What?" Ava slowly turned it over. Something was written there. A single sentence. The list is incomplete. Olivia felt her stomach twist. "What does that mean?" Nobody answered. Because nobody knew. The next morning, campus felt different. Students whispered when Olivia walked by. Some looked nervous. Others looked curious. Rumors were spreading. Fast. The scholarship mystery was no longer a secret. And someone clearly wasn't happy about it. As Olivia reached her locker, she immediately noticed something strange. The black symbol was gone. Completely gone. The paint had been cleaned. The surface looked brand new. Almost as if it had never been there. Yet Olivia knew it had. She had seen it herself. Professor Bennett approached from down the hallway. The moment he saw her, his expression changed. "Miss Hart." His voice sounded unusually serious. "Can we speak privately?" Olivia exchanged a glance with Maya. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. A few minutes later, Olivia found herself sitting inside Professor Bennett's office. The door clicked shut behind her. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Bennett opened a drawer. And removed a file. A very old file. Its edges were yellow. Its cover was faded. Its contents looked decades old. Slowly, he pushed it across the desk. Olivia frowned. "What is this?" Professor Bennett's eyes darkened. "The truth should have come out years ago." A chill ran down her spine. She opened the file. The first page contained a photograph. Not of Amelia. Not of Daniel. Not of any student she recognized. The photograph was dated twenty-seven years earlier. And beneath it was a name. Sophia Hart. Olivia stopped breathing. Hart. Her surname. Her hands trembled. "What..." She looked up. Professor Bennett's face had gone pale. "Sophia Hart was the first student who disappeared." The room spun. Olivia stared at him. "What are you saying?" Bennett swallowed. "I'm saying this mystery didn't start with Amelia." He pointed toward the photograph. "It started with your family." Across campus, Ethan received a message. Unknown Number. His pulse immediately quickened. The message contained only six words. She knows about Sophia now. Ethan's face drained of color. How did they know? Who was watching? A second message arrived. You're running out of time. Then a photograph appeared. Ethan's blood froze. The image showed Olivia leaving Professor Bennett's office. Taken only seconds ago. Someone was watching her again. And this time... They were getting closer. Much closer. That evening, rain poured over Uptown. Thunder echoed between buildings. Olivia sat alone in her apartment staring at the photograph of Sophia Hart. She couldn't stop looking at it. The resemblance was impossible to ignore. The same eyes. The same smile. The same features. Who was she? And why had nobody ever mentioned her? Suddenly— A knock echoed through the apartment. Olivia froze. Nobody was supposed to be here. Another knock. Slower this time. More deliberate. Her heart pounded. She approached the door carefully. Silence. No voice. No movement. Only rain. Slowly, she looked through the peephole. Nobody. The hallway was empty. Relief washed over her. Until she noticed something on the floor outside. A small black envelope. Her pulse quickened. She opened the door. The hallway remained empty. The envelope sat alone. Waiting. Olivia picked it up. Inside was a single key. And a note. Three words. Clock Tower. Midnight. Olivia's hands shook. Outside, lightning split the sky. And somewhere in the darkness of Cresthaven University, someone was waiting for her to come.
