Chapter 4 – The Choice Beneath the Blood

The forest exploded in chaos. Howls, snarls, and the sharp c***k of steel against steel tore through the night. Elara didn’t hesitate. She grabbed Jax’s arm, hauling him behind a thick oak as another arrow buried itself where his head had been seconds before. “You’re bleeding,” she hissed, pressing her hand harder against the cursed wound on his side. The silver veins pulsed beneath his skin, spreading like poison. “This isn’t just a scratch. This is a death curse. Who did this to you?” Jax’s breath came in short, ragged bursts, but his eyes stayed sharp, golden and burning. “Doesn’t matter. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re outnumbered.” “It changes everything,” she snapped. “If you die, the treaty is over. My pack will call it an assassination. Your pack will call it war.” “Then don’t let me die,” he said, surprising her with the raw honesty in his voice. For once, the cocky grin was gone. “I need you, Elara. Not as my guard. The black tendrils had spread higher, creeping toward his heart. “You don’t have much time,” she whispered, more to herself than to him. Jax reached up, his fingers brushing her cheek. “There’s a way to break it,” he said softly. “But it’s dangerous. And if it fails, we both die.” She froze. “What are you talking about?” “A blood bond,” he admitted. “A true mate bond. Sealed with our wolf’s blood. It can purge the curse. But if the bond isn’t real… it’ll kill us both.” Her breath caught. The bond already burned between them, raw and undeniable. But trusting him with her life? With her pack’s future? Outside, the battle raged closer. The enemy was hunting them. Time was running out. Elara looked into Jax’s eyes, the golden fire in them now faint but still there. “If we do this,” she said, voice steady despite the fear clawing at her ribs, “there’s no going back.” “Then don’t let go,” he whispered. She nodded, her hand sliding into his. “I won’t.” And as the first shadow of their enemies breached the cabin door, Elara made her choice
