Hal and Milly manned a cart that had a clay and stone oven built onto it. I walked onto the scene just as Hal pulled out a spatula laden with dark crusted bread. Milly froze with the balls of her hands deep in two mounds of white dough when she heard me call her name. "Lil'?" It was all the confirmation I needed. I ran to her and threw my arms about her, not caring about the flour and soot covering her. I chirped her name over and over, but stopped abruptly when I finally registered the hard belly forcing me to bend in order to hug her. I pulled away to get a closer look at her. She'd thinned, but still held much of her stout muscle. She looked tired, but her eyes were bright and her smile wide and true. "Are you pregnant?" I asked. She nodded. I squealed at the top of my lungs. "
