Chapter one: The Boy Nobody Choose

2398 Words
The moon was full when Kael Arden discovered that hope could be more dangerous than fear. Silver light poured across Silver Crest Pack, touching the wooden rooftops and turning the distant mountains pale beneath the night sky. From the center of the village came the sound of drums. Slow. Heavy. Ancient. Tonight was the Moon-Binding Ceremony. Tonight, every young wolf whose powers had fully awakened would stand beneath the sacred moonstone and discover whether the Moon Goddess had chosen a destined mate for them. For most wolves, it was the most important night of their lives. For Kael, it was supposed to change everything. He stood behind his small house, staring at his reflection in a bucket of water. The young man staring back at him looked nervous. Too nervous. "You look like you're about to be executed." Kael turned sharply. His younger sister, Nia, stood near the doorway with her arms folded. She was only fourteen, but she had already mastered the art of irritating him. "Thank you for the encouragement." "I wasn't trying to encourage you." "I noticed." Nia walked closer and looked down at the water. "You're fixing your hair again." "I'm not." "You've done it five times." "Four." "Five." Kael ignored her. Nia smiled. "You think your mate will be beautiful." Kael looked at her. "That's not what I'm thinking." "You're lying." "I'm not." "You are." He picked up a small cloth and threw it toward her. Nia jumped aside, laughing. For a moment, Kael laughed too. Then the drums sounded again. BOOM. The laughter disappeared. Both of them looked toward the village square. The ceremony would begin soon. Nia's expression softened. "You'll be fine." Kael looked away. "You don't know that." "I do." "How?" "Because you're my brother." Kael smiled faintly. That was the thing about Nia. She believed in him even when nobody else did. Their mother had died when Nia was still young, leaving Kael to become more than just her older brother. Their father had once been a respected warrior in Silver Crest Pack, but after a serious injury during a border battle, he had become quiet and withdrawn. Their family had slowly disappeared from the conversations that mattered. In Silver Crest Pack, strength was remembered. Weakness was forgotten. And Kael had spent most of his life feeling dangerously close to being forgotten. At nineteen, he was strong enough to fight. Fast enough to run with the other wolves. Capable enough to survive. But he was never exceptional. Never remarkable. When the young warriors trained, Kael was rarely the first to finish. When the pack competed, his name was rarely announced as the winner. When people spoke about Silver Crest's future, they mentioned others. Never him. Still, tonight might change everything. According to ancient tradition, the Moon Goddess connected two souls whose paths were destined to meet. A mate bond was supposed to exist beyond wealth, status, family, and power. At least, that was what Kael believed. "Kael." Nia's voice pulled him from his thoughts. "What?" "You should go." Kael looked toward the house. Their father had not come outside. He already knew why. His father hated ceremonies, especially ceremonies where powerful families stood before the pack and pretended everyone was equal. Kael understood that better than most people realized. He nodded. "Stay here." Nia frowned. "Why?" "Because the ceremony might go late." "I'm not a baby." "I know." "Then stop treating me like one." Kael smiled. "Because you're annoying." She kicked his leg. Kael laughed and stepped away. "Goodnight, Nia." "Good luck." He paused and turned toward the road. "Kael!" He looked back. Nia stood beneath the moonlight. "Whatever happens tonight, you're still my brother." Something tightened in Kale’s chest. He smiled. "Always." Then he walked away. --- The village was alive. Torches burned along the streets while wolves moved toward the central square. Children ran between adults, warriors guarded the entrances, and the smell of firewood and roasted meat filled the night air. Kael kept his hands in his pockets as he walked. He heard conversations around him. "Do you think anyone will find their mate tonight?" "There are more than twenty awakened wolves." "I heard Alpha Vale's daughter is attending." Kael slowed. Alpha Vale's daughter. Lyra Vale. Everyone knew her name. Lyra was the only daughter of Alpha Darius Vale. Beautiful. Intelligent. Powerful. And completely out of Kael's world. He had seen her many times at pack gatherings, usually from a distance. They had spoken only twice. Once, she asked him to move away from the entrance to the Alpha's hall. The second time, he had caught her when she slipped near the riverbank during a storm. She had thanked him. That was all. Kael had never imagined she would remember his name. Still, when he entered the village square, his eyes immediately moved toward the raised platform where Alpha's family stood. Lyra was already there. For a moment, Kael stopped. She wore a dark ceremonial dress beneath a silver cloak. Her black hair moved gently in the night wind. She looked calm. Distant. Untouchable. Kael quickly looked away. Don't be stupid. There were hundreds of wolves in Silver Crest. The Moon Goddess could choose anyone. He had no reason to think about Lyra Vale. "Kael!" Someone slapped him on the shoulder. Kael nearly jumped. "By the Moon, Elias!" Elias Crow laughed. "You look terrified." "Everyone keeps saying that." "Because it's true." "I'm not terrified." Elias raised an eyebrow. "You've been staring at the ground for ten seconds." "I was thinking." "About your future mate?" "No." "Her hair?" "No." "Her eyes?" Kael pushed him away. Elias laughed. Unlike Kael, Elias had always been noticed. Tall, broad-shouldered, and naturally powerful, he had awakened his wolf early and earned a place among the Alpha's training guards. Yet despite everything, Elias remained Kael's closest friend. "Relax," Elias said. "Maybe you'll get lucky." "And if I don't?" Elias shrugged. "Then nothing changes." Kael gave him a dry look. "That's exactly what I'm afraid of." Elias's smile faded. For a moment, he understood. Kael simply didn't want a mate. He wanted to belong somewhere. Elias placed a hand on his shoulder. "You belong here." Kael looked at him. "Do I?" Before Elias could answer, the drums stopped. Silence spread across the square. Alpha Darius Vale stepped forward. He was a large man with dark hair touched by gray. A scar crossed one side of his face, and power seemed to surround him like a storm. Every wolf lowered their head. Kael did the same. "Tonight," Alpha Vale said, his voice carrying across the square, "we stand beneath the Moon Goddess as our ancestors once did." The crowd remained silent. "For generations, Silver Crest has honored the sacred bond between destined mates." He turned toward the moonstone. It stood at the center of the square, a massive white stone covered in ancient symbols. "Those whose names are called will step forward." One by one, young wolves approached the stone. Some returned smiling. Others returned quietly. No bond. No mate. Then Elias's name was called. Kael watched as his friend placed his hand against the moonstone. Elias froze. Across the square, a young woman suddenly gasped. Their eyes met. A smile appeared on Elias's face. The crowd erupted into cheers. Kael laughed and clapped. "Go!" Elias hurried toward the young woman, and they embraced. Then another name was called. And another. Kael waited. His heart beat faster with every passing moment. Then— "Kael Arden." Everything seemed to stop. Elias looked back at him. "That's you." "I know." "Then move." Kael took a deep breath and stepped forward. The crowd separated. Too many eyes followed him. Too many whispers. The injured warrior's son. The ordinary wolf. The boy nobody expected much from. Kael reached the moonstone. Its surface glowed beneath the full moon. He raised his hand. His fingers trembled. Don't be afraid. He placed his palm against the stone. Nothing happened. One second passed. Then another. Kael's heart sank. Maybe there was no mate. Maybe the Moon Goddess had chosen nobody for him. Then the moonstone exploded with silver light. Kael stumbled backward. Gasps rose from the crowd. Power rushed through his body. His wolf roared inside him. Not in pain. Recognition. Kael looked up. And suddenly— He smelled her. Rain. Wildflowers. The cold air before a storm. His breath stopped. Slowly, Kael turned. Across the square, someone had frozen. Lyra Vale. Her eyes were wide. Her face had lost all color. Kael felt something pulling at his soul. A connection. Deep. Ancient. Impossible. His wolf pressed against his mind. Mine. Kael's knees nearly weakened. Lyra Vale. The Alpha's daughter. The most powerful young woman in Silver Crest. His destined mate. The silence became unbearable. Then someone whispered. "The Alpha's daughter..." Another voice followed. "Kael Arden?" Murmurs spread through the crowd. Kael barely heard them. For the first time in his life, Lyra was looking directly at him. Not past him. Not through him. At him. Kael took one step forward. "Lyra..." Her expression changed. Kael stopped. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Lyra looked toward her father. Alpha Vale stood perfectly still, but Kael could feel his anger from across the square. Then Lyra looked back at Kael. He waited. For one foolish second, he believed she might smile. Instead, she said one word. "No." The square became silent. Kael frowned. "What?" Lyra stepped backward. "I said no." A cold feeling entered Kael's chest. The mate's bond pulled between them, but Lyra's face showed no happiness. Only shock. And fear. Then she raised her voice. "So this is supposed to be my mate?" Kael felt every eye turn toward him. His face burned. "Lyra..." She shook her head. "No." "What are you saying?" She looked directly into his eyes. "I reject you." The world went silent. Kael stared at her. His mind refused to understand. "What?" "I reject the mate bond." Pain tore through his chest. Kael staggered backward. His wolf howled inside him. The pain was deeper than anything he had ever known. Around him, wolves gasped. A public rejection. Before the entire pack. Kael pressed a hand against his chest. "Lyra..." "I'm sorry." But she didn't sound, sorry. Her eyes moved briefly toward her father. And Kael understood. This wasn't only about him. It was about status. Power. The Alpha's family. Lyra Vale could not accept an ordinary wolf. Not him. Never him. Elias stepped forward. "Lyra, you can't—" Alpha Vale turned his cold gaze toward him. Elias stopped immediately. Kael stood alone. His wolf struggled inside him. Angry. Broken. Confused. Lyra raised her chin. "I will not accept a mate who cannot stand beside me." The words entered Kael like ice. He stared at her. "Is that what you think I am?" She said nothing. "Weak?" Still nothing. Kael looked toward Alpha Vale. The Alpha finally spoke. "The Moon Goddess may create bonds, Kael Arden, but destiny does not rule Silver Crest." The meaning was clear. The Alpha allowed this. Perhaps he had wanted it. Kael looked back at Lyra. "Look at me." She hesitated. Then she did. Kael swallowed the pain in his throat. "Say it again." The entire square waited. Lyra's expression hardened. "I reject you, Kael Arden." Something inside him shattered. But this time, he did not fall. Kael slowly nodded. The bond between them burned. Then weakened. His wolf screamed inside his mind. Tears filled Kael's eyes. He hated that they could see him breaking. But he would not beg. Not here. Not in front of them. Kael looked at Lyra one final time. "You don't have to worry." His voice was barely beyond a whisper. "I won't force you to accept me." He turned away. The crowd moved aside. Nobody stopped him. Nobody called his name. Only Elias. "Kael—" But Kael kept walking. The ceremony was over. At least for him. Behind him stood Silver Crest Pack. The place he had called home. The people he had spent his life trying to belong to. Tonight, they had watched him become something else. An outcast. A rejected mate. A wolf with no place. Kael walked through the crowd. One step. Then another. His chest burned. His wolf was silent now. That frightened him more than the pain. At the edge of the village, Kael stopped. For the first time, he looked back. The moon hung above Silver Crest. Cold. Beautiful. Distant. He remembered Nia's words. Whatever happens tonight, you're still my brother. For one brief moment, Kael wanted to run home. To his sister. To the small house where nobody cared whether he was powerful or chosen by destiny. But then he remembered Lyra's voice. I reject you. If he stayed, everyone would remember. Every training session. Every gathering. Every time Lyra walked past him. He would always be the rejected wolf. The boy nobody chose. Kael opened his eyes. "No," he whispered. The wind moved through the trees. For the first time in his life, something inside him changed. Not strength. Not yet. Something smaller. Something more dangerous. A decision. He would not spend the rest of his life trying to prove his worth to people who had already decided he had none. Kael turned away from Silver Crest. And stepped into the darkness beyond its borders. He didn't know where he was going. He didn't know what waited for him. He didn't know that powerful enemies would one day speak his name with fear. He didn't know that wolves abandoned by their packs would one day follow him. He didn't know that Alpha Vale would eventually regret allowing him to leave. Kael knew only one thing. He had entered the ceremony hoping destiny would give him somewhere to belong. Instead, destiny had taken everything from him. So he would build something new. Something that belonged to no Alpha. Something that could never reject him. The wind howled through the forest. And somewhere deep inside Kael's soul, beneath the pain and silence— His wolf opened its eyes. The wolf was changing. And Kael Arden was changing with it. Behind him, Silver Crest Pack disappeared into the darkness. Ahead of him waited the unknown. Kael stepped forward. Then disappeared into the forest. Unaware that the wolf who left Silver Crest that night— Would never return as the same man.
