Chapter 1

The Promise He Never Said Lena's POV I never believed that promises could be made without words. Until him. It had been three years since I last saw Adrian. Three years since that rainy afternoon. Three years since he looked at me with those familiar eyes and said nothing while I waited for an explanation that never came. And now, somehow, he was standing in front of me again. Alive. Real. And looking at me like no time had passed at all. I froze at the entrance of the café, my fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. He hadn't changed much. His dark hair was slightly longer than I remembered, his jaw sharper, and his expression still carried that quiet confidence that used to annoy me. But his eyes… His eyes were exactly the same. They were the reason I remembered him even when I tried so hard to forget. “Lena?” I heard my friend's voice beside me. I didn't answer. I couldn't. Adrian's gaze had already found mine. For a few seconds, neither of us moved. Then he slowly stood from his chair. “Lena.” My name. Just my name. Yet hearing it from him after three years made my chest ache. I swallowed hard. “Adrian.” He took one step toward me. I immediately stepped back. His expression fell. “You're here,” he said quietly. I almost laughed. Of all the things he could say after disappearing from my life, that was what he chose? “Yeah.” My voice sounded colder than I expected. “I'm here.” He looked at me for a moment. “I didn't know you'd be coming.” “Neither did I.” A silence settled between us. The kind of silence filled with everything we refused to say. I looked away first. “I have to go.” “Lena, wait.” His voice stopped me. I closed my eyes. For years, I had imagined this moment. I imagined myself asking why he left. Why he never called. Why he never explained. Why he made me feel like I wasn't worth staying for. But now that he was finally standing in front of me, I couldn't find the courage to ask any of it. I turned around. “What?” Adrian stared at me. There was something different in his expression. Something I couldn't understand. “I kept my promise.” My heart stopped. “What promise?” He didn't answer. Instead, he gave me that same small smile I remembered from years ago. “The one I never told you about.” I stared at him. And suddenly, memories came rushing back. A summer night. Two teenagers sitting beneath an old tree. A promise neither of us understood. And words Adrian never got the chance to say. I shook my head. “No.” His expression softened. “Lena—” “No.” I took a step backward. “Whatever promise you're talking about, Adrian… it's too late.” His eyes darkened. “I know.” “Then why are you here?” He looked at me for a long moment. “Because I came back for you.” And just like that, the walls I had spent three years building began to crack.
