The Impossible Offer Episode 1: The Offer Amelia Hart stared at the red notice in her trembling hands. FINAL WARNING: YOUR ELECTRICITY WILL BE DISCONNECTED IF PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN THREE DAYS. She read it again. Then a third time. As if staring at the words long enough could somehow make them disappear. It didn't. Amelia slowly lowered the notice onto the small kitchen table and looked around her apartment. The place wasn't much. The sofa had a tear along one side, the curtains had faded from years of sunlight, and the refrigerator made an annoying buzzing sound every few minutes. But it was home. And she was about to lose even that. Her rent was already overdue. Her electricity bill was almost due. And her mother's medical expenses were becoming impossible to handle. Amelia closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Just one problem at a time," she whispered. But how could she? Her phone suddenly rang. She grabbed it from the table. Mum. Amelia answered immediately. "Hello, Mum." "Amelia..." Her mother's voice was weak. Amelia's heart sank. "What's wrong? Are you feeling worse?" "I'm fine, sweetheart." "You don't sound fine." There was a long silence. Then her mother sighed. "The doctor wants me to start another round of treatment." Amelia gripped the phone tightly. "How much?" "Amelia, don't worry about the money." "How much, Mum?" Her mother hesitated. "Three thousand dollars." Amelia stopped breathing for a moment. Three thousand dollars. She looked toward the small pile of bills on the table. She barely had enough money to buy groceries. "Okay," she finally said. "Okay?" "I'll get it." Her mother gave a tired laugh. "You always say that." "Because I always find a way." "You shouldn't have to carry everything alone." Amelia swallowed the lump in her throat. "I can handle it." "You've been saying that since your father died." Amelia looked down. Her father had been gone for six years, but the pain still felt fresh sometimes. "I'll call you later, Mum." "Amelia—" "I love you." "I love you too." The call ended. Amelia placed the phone on the table. For several seconds, she didn't move. Then she opened her banking application. Her balance appeared on the screen. $217.46 She stared at it. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "Three thousand dollars..." She leaned back in her chair. Maybe she could borrow from someone. But who? Her best friend had already helped her twice. Her coworkers were struggling with their own problems. She had already sold her grandmother's necklace. There was nothing left. A sharp knock came at the door. Amelia froze. Another knock followed. She already knew who it was. She opened the door. Mr. Collins, her landlord, stood outside with an impatient expression. "Amelia." "Mr. Collins." "I hope you haven't forgotten our conversation." "I haven't." "Your rent is two weeks late." "I know. I'm sorry." "Sorry doesn't pay rent." Amelia lowered her eyes. "I'll have it soon." "You said that last week." "I promise I'll pay." He sighed. "Three days, Amelia. If I don't receive the money by Friday, you need to move out." Her heart dropped. "Please. I just need a little more time." "I've already given you extra time." He turned away. "Three days." Then he walked down the hallway. Amelia closed the door and leaned against it. She felt tears gathering in her eyes. "No." She wiped them away. She refused to cry. Crying wouldn't pay her rent. Crying wouldn't pay her mother's hospital bills. She picked up her phone and started searching for jobs. Anything. Extra shifts. Cleaning. Waitressing. Office work. She would do whatever it took. Then her phone rang. Unknown Number. Amelia stared at the screen. She almost ignored it. But after the second ring, she answered. "Hello?" "Amelia Hart?" "Yes. Who is this?" "My name is Daniel Reed." "How did you get my number?" "I represent a man named Adrian Black." Amelia frowned. "I don't know anyone by that name." "You don't need to." "Then why are you calling me?" "Because Mr. Black would like to meet you." Amelia almost laughed. "Why would a man I don't know want to meet me?" "Because he has an offer for you." "What kind of offer?" "One that could solve your financial problems." Amelia sat down. "Who is he?" "Adrian Black is a businessman." "That doesn't answer my question." Daniel was silent for a moment. "He is a very wealthy businessman." Amelia frowned. "Why me?" "That's something Mr. Black will explain himself." "I don't meet strangers." "I understand." Daniel's voice remained calm. "But I think you'll change your mind when you hear what he's offering." "What?" "Money." Amelia's fingers tightened around the phone. "How much?" "Enough to take care of your mother's treatment." Her entire body went still. "How do you know about my mother?" "We've done our research." Fear replaced curiosity. "Who exactly are you people?" "You'll get your answers if you meet Mr. Black." "When?" "Tonight." "Where?" "I'll send you the address." The call ended. Amelia stared at the phone. A message arrived almost immediately. She opened it. It contained the name of one of the most expensive hotels in the city. And underneath it: 8:00 p.m. Private dining room. Come alone. Amelia stared at the message. Every sensible part of her mind told her not to go. This was dangerous. A stranger knowing about her mother's illness wasn't normal. A wealthy man offering her money wasn't normal either. But then she remembered the doctor's words. Three thousand dollars. She remembered the landlord. Three days. And she remembered her mother's weak voice. You shouldn't have to carry everything alone. Amelia stood. "Just one meeting." She would go. She would listen. And then she would leave. --- At exactly 7:56 p.m., Amelia stood outside the hotel. She looked down at her simple black dress. It was the nicest thing she owned, but suddenly she felt painfully underdressed. People around her wore expensive suits and elegant dresses. She almost turned around. Then she remembered why she was there. Her mother's life could depend on this. She walked inside. A man in a black suit approached her. "Ms. Hart?" "Yes." "Mr. Reed is waiting for you." He led her through a private hallway and stopped in front of a large wooden door. He opened it. Amelia stepped inside. The room was quiet. A tall man stood near the window with his back toward her. The city lights reflected against the glass behind him. "You're late." Amelia checked her phone. "It's 7:59." The man slowly turned around. Amelia's breath caught. He was younger than she expected. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair. A sharp jaw. And eyes that were cold enough to make her uncomfortable. He studied her without saying anything. Amelia lifted her chin. "Are you Adrian Black?" "Yes." "I'm Amelia." "I know." Something about his voice made her nervous. She moved toward the table. "Your assistant said you wanted to make me an offer." Adrian walked toward her. "Sit." "I'd rather stand." One eyebrow lifted. "You're not easily intimidated." "I didn't come here to be intimidated." A faint smile appeared on his lips. It disappeared almost immediately. "Good." He placed a folder on the table. Amelia looked at it. "What's that?" "Your solution." She opened the folder. Her eyes moved across the first page. Then she froze. At the top were the words: MARRIAGE CONTRACT AGREEMENT She looked up sharply. "What is this?" "A contract." "I can see that." "You'll marry me." Amelia stared at him. Then she laughed. It was an incredulous laugh. "You can't be serious." "I am." "You called me here to offer me money in exchange for marrying you?" "Yes." "For how long?" "One year." "And then?" "We divorce." Amelia pushed the folder toward him. "No." Adrian didn't touch it. "You haven't heard the terms." "I don't need to." "You need money." Her expression changed. "Don't talk about my problems like you bought them." "I'm not buying your problems." "Then what are you doing?" "Offering you a solution." "Why me?" Adrian's eyes remained fixed on hers. "Because you are exactly what I need." Amelia's pulse quickened. "What do you need?" "My family believes I should be married." "And?" "And I have no intention of falling in love." She stared at him. "So you want a wife who won't love you?" "I want a wife who understands this is a business arrangement." Amelia shook her head. "This is crazy." "One million dollars." She stopped. Adrian watched her carefully. "Half will be transferred to you when you sign. The rest will be paid when the marriage ends." Amelia's mind raced. One million dollars. Her mother's treatment. Her rent. Her debts. A completely different life. But then she looked at Adrian. There was something behind those cold eyes. Something he wasn't telling her. "Why are you really doing this?" she asked. For the first time, his expression changed. Only slightly. But Amelia noticed. "That's not part of the agreement." "It is if I'm expected to marry you." Adrian stepped closer. "You want the money." "I need the money." "Then sign." Amelia looked down at the contract. Her hand trembled. She imagined her mother receiving the treatment she desperately needed. She imagined paying every debt. She imagined waking up one morning without fear. Then she looked back at Adrian. "What are the rules?" His gaze darkened. "There are several." "Tell me." "You will live in my house." "Fine." "You will attend family events with me." "Fine." "You will never speak to the press about our arrangement." "Fine." "You will not interfere in my personal life." Amelia hesitated. "What does that mean?" "It means you don't ask questions about women I knew before you." Her stomach tightened. "And you don't ask questions about men I knew before you." Adrian's jaw tightened. "Agreed." "And no falling in love?" He looked directly into her eyes. "Especially that." For some reason, those three words made Amelia's heart beat faster. She quickly looked away. "One year." "One year." "Then we walk away." "Exactly." Amelia picked up the pen. Her fingers hovered over the signature line. She knew this was reckless. She knew marrying a stranger was dangerous. But she also knew she had run out of choices. She signed her name. Amelia Hart. Adrian took the contract from her. He looked at her signature. Then he looked at her. "Congratulations, Mrs. Black." Amelia's heart stopped. "Don't call me that." A faint smile crossed his face. "You'll have to get used to it." She stood. "I want the money transferred immediately." "It will be." She reached the door. Then Adrian spoke. "Amelia." She turned. His expression had become serious again. "There is one more thing you need to know." "What?" He walked toward her slowly. "When you become my wife tomorrow, everyone will believe our marriage is real." Amelia frowned. "And?" Adrian's eyes locked onto hers. "If anyone discovers that our marriage is fake, the contract becomes meaningless." She swallowed. "Meaning?" "You lose everything." Amelia's blood ran cold. Before she could respond, Adrian added quietly: "And there are people who will do anything to make sure this marriage fails." To be continued...
