The Impossible Offer Episode 7: The Man Behind the Secret Amelia stood outside Adrian's study, her heart pounding so violently that she could barely hear anything else. "Is my father alive?" Adrian didn't answer. That silence was more painful than any confession could have been. Amelia stepped into the study. "Tell me." The man who had been speaking with Adrian moments earlier was standing near the desk. He was older, perhaps in his fifties, with silver beginning to show in his dark hair. He looked at Amelia with an expression that immediately made her uncomfortable. "Who is he?" she demanded. Adrian's gaze remained on her. "His name is Samuel Grant." "What does he have to do with my father?" Samuel exchanged a glance with Adrian. "She wasn't supposed to hear this yet." Amelia's anger flared. "Stop talking about me as if I'm not standing here." Adrian stepped toward her. "Amelia, listen to me." "No." She held up her phone. "I received a message saying my father didn't die six years ago." Adrian's eyes moved to the screen. "And it said you know where he is." "I do." The words struck her like a physical blow. Amelia stared at him. "You do?" Adrian nodded slowly. "Yes." Her knees almost weakened. "Where?" "I don't know exactly where he is now." "You just said you know." "I know that he's alive." Amelia's eyes filled with tears. "How?" "Because I've been searching for him." "Why?" "Because I believe he holds the answer to everything that's happening." Amelia shook her head. "This doesn't make sense." "It will." "When?" "When we know who we can trust." She laughed bitterly. "You keep saying that." Her voice cracked. "But I'm the person you married. Don't I deserve the truth?" Adrian's expression softened. "You deserve all of it." "Then tell me." He glanced toward Samuel. "Leave us." Samuel hesitated. "Adrian—" "Go." Samuel picked up his coat and walked past Amelia. Before leaving, he stopped. "Your father saved my life once." Amelia looked at him. "What?" Samuel gave her a sad smile. "That's why I'm still helping Adrian find him." Then he walked away. The door closed. Amelia turned toward Adrian. "What happened to my father?" Adrian walked to the desk and opened a drawer. He removed a thin file. "This is everything I've discovered." He placed it in front of her. Amelia stared at the folder. "Why didn't you show me this before?" "Because I needed to confirm the information." "You could have told me." "I was afraid you'd go looking for him." "And now?" "Now you're already involved." She opened the file. The first page contained a photograph of her father. But it wasn't the photograph she had seen earlier. This one showed him standing beside another man. Amelia's breath caught. She recognized the second man immediately. Adrian's father. She looked up. "They knew each other." "They worked together." "My mother said Dad was an adviser to your family." "That's only part of the story." Amelia turned the page. There were company documents, photographs, handwritten notes, and several newspaper articles. Her eyes moved quickly. Then she saw a date. September 14, six years ago. The day her father supposedly died. She looked at Adrian. "What happened that day?" "Your father was supposed to meet my father." "Why?" "They had discovered that someone inside the company was stealing money." Amelia frowned. "Someone was stealing from the company?" "Millions." "And my father knew?" "Yes." She continued reading. "Who was responsible?" "We don't know." "Then why was Dad killed?" Adrian's jaw tightened. "Because he found evidence." Amelia's fingers trembled. "What evidence?" "A financial record linking someone powerful to the theft." "Who?" Adrian looked at her. "That's what we've been trying to find." Amelia stared at the file. "What happened to your father?" "He died three months after yours disappeared." She looked up sharply. "Disappeared?" Adrian nodded. "That's what I said." "But everyone believed my father died in a car accident." "That accident was staged." Amelia's eyes widened. "How do you know?" "Because the body recovered from the vehicle wasn't your father's." Her heart stopped. "What?" Adrian's voice remained quiet. "The dental records didn't match." Amelia covered her mouth. "Then why did my mother believe he was dead?" "Because someone wanted her to." She slowly sat down. For six years, she had mourned a man who might have been alive. Six years of believing she had lost her father. Six years of accepting a lie. She wiped away a tear. "Why didn't anyone tell us?" "Because whoever arranged his disappearance was powerful enough to silence everyone who knew the truth." "And you?" "I found out eighteen months ago." "How?" "My father left something behind." Adrian opened another drawer. He took out a small metal box. He placed it on the desk. Amelia stared at it. "What is that?" "My father's." He unlocked it. Inside was an old watch, several documents, and a small photograph. Amelia picked up the photograph. It showed her father and Adrian's father standing together. On the back were handwritten words. Trust no one in the Black family. Amelia's blood ran cold. She looked at Adrian. "Why would your father write this?" "I don't know." "But you're a Black." "Yes." "So how do I know you're not the person he was warning my father about?" Adrian didn't respond. Amelia stood. "How do I know this marriage isn't another trap?" His eyes darkened. "Because if I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have spent months trying to find out who killed your father." "You could be manipulating me." "I could." She stared at him. "But I'm not." The certainty in his voice unsettled her. She turned away. "I need to speak to my mother." "You can tomorrow." "No." She looked back at him. "I need answers now." "She's recovering." "She's my mother." "I know." "Then take me to her." Adrian shook his head. "Not tonight." "Why?" "Because your mother's room is being watched." Amelia froze. "By whom?" "We don't know." "Then how can you leave her there?" "She has security." "Security clearly isn't enough." Adrian moved closer. "We're bringing her somewhere safe." "Where?" "Here." Amelia stared at him. "You're bringing my mother to this house?" "Yes." "No." "Why?" "Because your family is the reason she's in danger." "And keeping her at the hospital leaves her exposed." She hesitated. He was right. She hated that he was right. "How soon?" "Tonight." Amelia looked at him. "You've already arranged it." "Yes." She exhaled. "Of course you have." Adrian's mouth curved slightly. "You complain a lot." "I'm married to a man who makes decisions without asking me." "You're married to a man who keeps you alive." "That isn't an excuse." "No." His expression softened. "But it is my responsibility." The words silenced her. For a moment, neither moved. The tension between them felt different tonight. Not like the sharp arguments they had shared before. Something warmer. More dangerous. Adrian reached out and gently touched her cheek. Amelia froze. His fingers were warm. "You're shaking." "I'm angry." "I know." "You don't." His thumb brushed away a tear she hadn't realized had fallen. "You're frightened." Amelia looked into his eyes. "Yes." His hand remained against her cheek. "You don't have to be afraid when you're with me." She swallowed. "That's a dangerous promise." "I keep my promises." Their eyes remained locked. For one brief moment, Amelia forgot about the contract. Forgot about the threats. Forgot about her father's disappearance. All she could feel was Adrian's hand against her skin. Then she stepped back. "This doesn't change anything." "I know." "We still have rules." "I remember." "No falling in love." His expression became unreadable. "Especially that." She nodded. "Good." But neither of them looked convinced. --- Later that night, Amelia lay awake in her new bedroom. Sleep refused to come. Her father's photograph sat on the bedside table. She kept looking at it. Alive. Somewhere. After six years of believing he was gone. She picked up her phone and stared at the threatening message again. Your father didn't die six years ago. Whoever sent it knew the truth. And they wanted her to discover it. But why? Her phone suddenly vibrated. Amelia jumped. Another unknown number. She opened the message. Stop asking questions about Richard Hart. Her breathing stopped. A second message appeared. Your father should have stayed dead. Amelia's hands began to tremble. She immediately got out of bed. She opened her bedroom door. The hallway was dark. "Adrian?" No answer. She walked toward his room. Before she could knock, she heard something downstairs. A faint sound. Like glass breaking. Amelia froze. Then footsteps. Someone was inside the mansion. She quietly stepped backward. A shadow moved at the end of the corridor. Amelia's heart raced. She reached for the nearest door and slipped inside. She held her breath. The footsteps came closer. One step. Then another. The handle of the door began to move. Amelia covered her mouth. Suddenly, a hand grabbed her from behind. She tried to scream. A familiar voice whispered into her ear. "Don't make a sound." Adrian. She turned sharply. He was standing behind her, one finger pressed against his lips. His expression was deadly serious. Amelia nodded. He gently took her hand. They moved toward the door. The footsteps had stopped. Adrian opened it silently. The hallway was empty. He looked toward the staircase. Then his phone vibrated. He checked the screen. His face changed. "What happened?" Amelia whispered. He showed her the message. You found the truth too late. Another message arrived. This time, there was a photograph. Amelia looked at it. Her entire body went cold. It was her father. Older. Alive. Standing outside a building she recognized. The hospital. And beside him stood a woman. Amelia stared at the photograph. She knew that woman. Her mother. Her lips parted. "Adrian..." He looked at her. "My mother knew." Adrian's expression hardened. "Apparently." Amelia's eyes filled with tears. "If my mother knew my father was alive..." She couldn't finish. Adrian took the phone from her. "We're going to find out why." "And if she's been lying to me?" He looked at her. "Then we'll find out what she's been protecting you from." A noise came from downstairs. Both of them turned. Adrian immediately pulled Amelia behind him. "Stay here." She grabbed his arm. "No." He looked down at her hand. "I'm coming with you." "Amelia—" "I'm tired of being protected from the truth." For several seconds, Adrian stared at her. Then he nodded. "Stay close." Together, they descended the staircase. Neither of them noticed the small camera hidden above the entrance. Its red light blinked once. Then a voice came through a concealed speaker. "She's finally asking the right questions." A pause. "Now we can begin." To be continued...
