The Impossible Offer Episode 5: A Dangerous Promise The hospital corridor smelled of disinfectant and fear. Amelia hurried beside Adrian, barely keeping up with his long strides. "How did someone get into my mother's room?" she asked. "We don't know yet." "Was she hurt?" "No." "Then why does everyone look so worried?" Adrian stopped. "Because whoever did it wasn't there by accident." Amelia stared at him. "What do you mean?" "Someone asked the nurse about your mother." Her stomach tightened. "What did they ask?" "Your name. Where you lived. Whether you were married." Amelia went silent. Someone was investigating her. Because of Adrian. The thought made her angry. "You knew this could happen." "I knew you could become a target." "And you still brought me into your life." Adrian's eyes hardened. "You chose this." "I chose it because my mother needed treatment." "I know." "Then don't act like this is some simple arrangement." His expression softened for the briefest moment. "I don't." Before Amelia could respond, a nurse approached. "Ms. Hart?" "Yes?" "Your mother is awake." Amelia immediately moved toward the room. Adrian followed. She stopped at the doorway. "You stay here." He raised an eyebrow. "Why?" "My mother doesn't know about the marriage." "I'll stay outside." Amelia nodded. She entered the room alone. Her mother was lying against the pillows, looking tired but conscious. "Amelia." Amelia rushed to her side. "Mum." She took her mother's hand. "How are you feeling?" "Better now that you're here." Amelia smiled, although tears filled her eyes. "I was so worried." Her mother noticed the diamond ring on her finger. Her eyes widened. "What's that?" Amelia froze. She had forgotten about the ring. "It's..." Her mother looked at her suspiciously. "Amelia." She swallowed. "I got married." The room became silent. "You did what?" "I got married." Her mother's eyes widened. "To whom?" Amelia glanced toward the door. "My husband is outside." Her mother stared at her. "You got married and didn't tell me?" "It happened very quickly." "Who is he?" Before Amelia could answer, Adrian entered. Her mother looked at him. For a moment, neither spoke. Adrian walked toward the bed. "Mrs. Hart." Her mother's expression remained cautious. "You're Adrian Black." It wasn't a question. Adrian nodded. "You know him?" Her mother looked at Amelia. "I know the Black family." Amelia's brows furrowed. "You never told me that." Her mother ignored the question. "Why did you marry my daughter?" Adrian glanced at Amelia. "Because I love her." Amelia's eyes widened. Her mother stared at him. Then she looked at Amelia. "Is that true?" Amelia forced herself to smile. "Yes." The lie felt heavier than she expected. Her mother studied her face. "You've known him for how long?" "Long enough." "Amelia." "I'm happy, Mum." Her mother sighed. "If you're happy, then I'm happy." Adrian remained silent. After a moment, Amelia's mother reached for his hand. "Take care of my daughter." Adrian looked down at her hand. Then at Amelia. "I will." Something about the certainty in his voice made Amelia's chest tighten. Her mother smiled faintly. "Good." A nurse entered. "Mrs. Hart needs to rest." Amelia kissed her mother's forehead. "I'll come back tomorrow." Her mother nodded. As Amelia walked toward the door, her mother called her name. "Amelia." She turned. "Yes?" "Be careful." Amelia frowned. "About what?" Her mother glanced at Adrian. "Everything." --- Outside the hospital room, Amelia immediately turned toward Adrian. "You lied." "So did you." "I didn't mean it like that." "Neither did I." She stared at him. "You told my mother you loved me." "It was necessary." "Was it?" He stepped closer. "She needed reassurance." Amelia lowered her voice. "You could have said you care about me." Adrian's eyes met hers. "Would that have been believable?" She didn't know how to answer. He looked away. "Your mother knows more about my family than you realize." "What did you mean earlier?" "I noticed." "She said she knows the Black family." "Yes." "How?" Adrian shook his head. "I don't know yet." Amelia folded her arms. "You're hiding something." "So are you." "What am I hiding?" "You're afraid." She went quiet. Adrian's voice softened. "You're trying to pretend this doesn't scare you." "Of course I'm scared." He looked at her. "Good." She frowned. "Good?" "Fear keeps people alert." "And what keeps you alert?" His expression changed. "Experience." They continued down the corridor. As they approached the elevator, Adrian's phone rang. He answered. "Yes?" His face changed. "Where?" A pause. "Don't touch anything. I'm coming." He ended the call. "What happened?" "Someone broke into your apartment." Amelia stopped walking. "My apartment?" "Yes." Her heart began racing. "Was anything stolen?" "We don't know." "Take me there." "No." "Adrian—" "You aren't going back there." "It's my home." "It's no longer safe." She stepped in front of him. "I need to see it." "No." "You can't tell me where I can go." "You're my wife." "And you're not my owner." His jaw tightened. "I know." "Then stop treating me like one." For several seconds they stared at each other. Finally, Adrian sighed. "Fine." He gestured toward the elevator. "But you stay beside me." --- Amelia's apartment looked exactly as she had left it. Except the front door was damaged. She stepped inside slowly. The place had been searched. Drawers were open. Clothes were scattered across the floor. The cushions had been thrown aside. Her small kitchen table had been overturned. Amelia stood frozen. Someone had been inside her home. Her home. The only place that had ever truly belonged to her. She walked toward the bedroom. Adrian caught her wrist. "Don't." She looked at him. "Why?" "The police are checking everything." "Police?" "I called them." Amelia pulled her hand free. "I don't understand." Adrian looked around. "Whoever came here wasn't looking for money." "How do you know?" "Nothing valuable was taken." Amelia's stomach dropped. "Then what were they looking for?" Adrian's eyes moved toward the bedroom. "We'll find out." A police officer approached. "Mr. Black." Adrian nodded. "Anything?" "We found this." The officer held up a small envelope. Amelia stared at it. "What's inside?" "We don't know yet." The officer handed it to Adrian. He opened it carefully. A photograph fell onto the table. Amelia picked it up. Her face went pale. It was an old photograph of her father. She stared at it. "I've never seen this picture before." Adrian looked at her. "Are you sure?" "Yes." She turned the photograph over. There was writing on the back. Four words. Ask your mother about Black. Amelia's breathing became uneven. She looked at Adrian. "Black?" He said nothing. "Why would someone leave this here?" Adrian's expression had become dangerously cold. "I don't know." "You said your family had nothing to do with me." "I said I didn't know why you were chosen." Amelia looked at the photograph again. Her father's face stared back at her from a past she barely understood. Suddenly, memories surfaced. Her father had always refused to talk about his years before she was born. Whenever she asked, he changed the subject. She had always assumed there was nothing important about it. Maybe she had been wrong. "Adrian." He looked at her. "I think my father knew your family." Adrian's eyes narrowed. "What makes you say that?" "Because whoever did this wants me to ask my mother about the Black family." He took the photograph from her. "Then we'll ask her." Amelia shook her head. "Not yet." "Why?" "Because if my mother knows something, I don't want to frighten her." Adrian studied her. "You shouldn't face this alone." "I've been facing everything alone for years." "Not anymore." She looked at him. The words were simple. But something inside her shifted. "Why do you care?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. His gaze stayed on her. "Because I made you a promise." "What promise?" "That no one would hurt you." Amelia's heart began beating faster. "And if protecting me puts you in danger?" "Then so be it." She stared at him. For a moment, the walls around her seemed to disappear. This wasn't supposed to be real. Their marriage was supposed to last one year. There were supposed to be rules. No love. No emotional attachment. No questions about the past. Yet Adrian was standing in her ruined apartment, promising to protect her. And she was beginning to wonder whether the greatest danger wasn't the people threatening them. Maybe it was the feelings growing between them. Adrian stepped closer. "Amelia." "Yes?" "There's something else." She looked up. "What?" "I found out who owns the number that sent the first threat." Her breath caught. "Who?" Adrian's expression was grim. "A man named Richard Hart." Amelia's face went blank. "That's impossible." "Why?" "Because Richard Hart..." She swallowed. "...was my father."
