Falling Deeper

Winter settled heavily over the city. Snow covered rooftops and streets in silver white. Inside the bookstore, Christmas lights glowed warmly against wooden shelves. Elias helped Delilah decorate every evening after work. One night, while hanging ornaments near the café corner, Delilah slipped from the ladder. Elias caught her instantly. For a second, she found herself suspended in his arms. Both of them laughing. “You really are trying to kill yourself with holiday decorations,” he teased. Delilah smiled. “Maybe I wanted attention.” “You already have mine.” His tone turned serious. The air between them changed. Slowly, Elias brushed snowflakes from her hair. “You’re beautiful,” he whispered. Delilah’s heartbeat quickened. No one had ever looked at her the way Elias did. As though she was something rare. Something precious. That night, she invited him upstairs. Her apartment felt small and intimate beneath dim candlelight. They sat together drinking tea while snow fell outside the windows. “Can I ask you something?” Elias said. “Anything.” “What are you afraid of?” Delilah stared into her cup. “Losing people.” “Everyone fears that.” “No,” she whispered. “I mean truly losing them. Watching someone become a stranger.” Elias understood. She could see it in his eyes. “I used to think love was permanent,” she admitted. “And now?” “Now I think people leave when they finally see who you really are.” Elias reached for her hand. “I see you.” The sincerity in his voice shattered something fragile inside her. Tears slipped down her cheeks before she could stop them. Elias pulled her gently into his arms. For several moments, she simply cried against his chest. Not from sadness. From relief. Relief that someone finally understood her loneliness. That night, they made love for the first time. Slowly. Tenderly. As though both were afraid of breaking the moment. Afterward, Delilah lay awake listening to Elias breathe beside her. Moonlight illuminated his face softly. She touched his hand carefully. And for the first time in years, the future no longer terrified her.
