Colt flips up the shield of his helmet and looks at me wide-eyed. "Oh, shit." He opens and closes his mouth a few times as if looking for the right words. "My dad is going to lose his damn mind if mine is. I can't even imagine what yours will do. It took him forever to finally accept that you were never going to be with a guy." Sadness briefly filled his eyes before looking down.
"It's alright, Colt. I know my dad's going to be livid if mine is human, but honestly, as long as she accepts me, I couldn't care less what he thinks. Godess above, I hope I don't f**k it all up. To be quite honest with you, I don't know what he would hate more, my mate being human or a shifter that wasn't a wolf." I tell him as I shrug at the last part.
"f**k me. I didn't even consider that. This is going to be f****d any way you look at it if either of our mates are anything but a wolf. But, like you, I don't have a clue what would be worse in his mind." He stares down at his bike for a moment before shaking his head. "f**k it. I don't give a damn what she is either. She's my mate, and that's that. Anyone who has an issue with it can go f**k themselves." He nods his head at me.
I smile and nod at his words. "Damn f*****g right they can. But first, we gotta find them." I chuckle.
"Yeah, that would probably be a good place to start." He laughs.
"Alright," I pull out my phone and pull up my GPS. "So, it looks like there's a small town about ten miles from here. What do you say we check it out and grab a bite to eat before we head home?" I look up at him.
"Yeah, sure. I could eat." He smirks before flipping the visor back down on his helmet.
I put my phone back and zipped up the pocket before starting off again. We both speed up and cover the ten miles in less than five minutes. The both of us love the rush we get. It is as close as we can get to running as wolves. Plus, as shifters, it probably would not kill us if we got into an accident. It would hurt like f*****g hell and take time to recover but we would eventually be as good as new.
As the town comes into view, we slow down. There is no need to be getting ourselves into trouble where we have no authority. As we slowly make our way through the small town, I spot a little hole in the wall café with some outdoor seating.
"Let's stop at that little café on the left on the corner." I link to Colt.
"Alright. Though it looks like we'll need to park around the corner. Seems to be pretty busy." He responds.
I nod my head and signal for a left turn to hopefully find somewhere to park. We managed to find a spot about a block or so down in front of what looks like a vacant lot, but people are using it as overflow parking for local businesses. We turn off our bikes and walk back down to the café.
As we walk, Colt links me. "Is it just me, or is almost everyone staring at us?" He shifts his eyes around slightly. He's also a bit tense.
"Calm down, you gotta remember this is a small town. We are strangers. They're probably just curious as to why we're here." I respond.
He nods his head to me ever so slightly. signaling that he understands, but I know him well enough to know his guard will be up regardless. Especially when we are somewhere unfamiliar. We are the next in line alpha and beta, so we can not afford to let our guards down.
As we reach the café Colt opens the door for me. As soon as we enter the bell above the door jingles and we both cringe a bit at how loud it is to our sensitive hearing. We walk up to the counter and smile at the young woman in an apron with the café logo on it. The woman blushes and slightly bites her bottom lip. I side eye Colt and can see him fighting back his laughter.
"Hello," I lay my long caramel fingers on the edge of the counter and look at her name tag. "Jenny, we're not from around here. My friend and I would like to get something to eat as well as two regular lattes. What would you recommend for us?" I ask as she turns an even darker shade of pink.
"We-well, our sp-special today is the, uh, turkey club on rye. It's a pretty big favorite around here. We, uh, we get all our ingredients fresh from the local farmers, too." Jenny nods as she tells us.
Colt steps forward as he pulls out his wallet. "Sounds delicious, Jenny. Thank you. How much do we owe you?" He smiles and shows his dimples.
I roll my eyes at his behavior. He does this all the time. He knows the girls love his dimples, and he has used them to their fullest. Gotten away with a lot of free food and drinks, too.
"o-oh. Uh, let me just ring it up for you." She stutters as she shuffles over to the register. "Two regular lattes and two specials. That will be," She pushes the buttons and chews her bottom lip a bit. "$15.85 for you." She looks up at Colt.
"Here ya go, and keep the change." He gives her $30, and she eyes go wide.
"Oh, no. I-I can't take this. That's way too much." She shakes her head so quickly that I think her head might just fly off.
"Of course you can. You have been an excellent help to us, and we appreciate it very much." He sets the money on the counter, and we both walk away to wait for our order. We watch as Jenny stares at the money for a moment before she hesitantly picks it up. She pulls out the change from the register and looks over at us. We both simply smile at her, and then she slowly puts it in the mostly empty tip jar.
"You know you probably just blew everyone's minds in here, and they probably think we're a couple of rich kids either looking to cause trouble or try and buy up all their land." I chuckle as I link to Colt.
Shrugging slightly, he responds. "Does it really matter what they think? I doubt we will be up this way for a while, if ever."
"True enough, I suppose." I reply.
"He-heres your order." Jenny says quietly.
Colt walks up to the counter and winks at her as he says, "Thanks, Jenny. Have a wonderful rest of your day."
I just smirk and shake my head at him as I take my food and drink from him.
We go back out, cringing slightly at the loud bell, and find a table away from others. As we take our seats opposite each other, watching our backs, we open our sandwiches and inhale the smells. Damn, Jenny wasn't kidding about the ingredients being fresh. I pick mine up and take a big bite. The flavors explode in my mouth, and I briefly close my eyes in satisfaction. Looking over at Colt, I notice he has the same reaction.
After swallowing, I say, "Maybe we will come back after all. I don't usually like rye, but this is probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten."
Colt nods as he smiles before swallowing his bite. "Oh, definitely. " He takes a sip of his latte, and I watch his eyebrows rise. "Damn."
I chuckle as I pick up my cup and inhale. It smells incredible. Not overly sweet or burnt. I take a sip and savor it. Damn. I laugh and smile at Colt.
As we sit quietly eating, we listen to the people around gossiping about us. Some try to be subtle and avert their eyes, whereas some openly stare. Neither of us really care what is said as long as it's not threatening to us.
Just as I am about to finish my latte, the wind shifts slightly, and I catch the scent of spicy Chai and honey. I started to salivate and let out a low rumble from my chest. Ezra claws at my insides and howls, wanting to chase the scent. I furrow my brow as I rub my sternum.
'What's going on, E?' I ask her confused.
'We have to find the source. I feel it's pull.' She responds.
'Feel it's pull? what does that even mean?' I question even more confused.
'We must find it!' She pushes, wanting out.
I clench my jaw and let out a low growl as I fight against her. 'STOP, EZRA! You know damn well we can not expose ourselves to humans!'
The wind shifts again, causing the scent to fade. Ezra whimpers and tucks her grey tail under her. 'I'm sorry. I just feel like we must find it. It is important.' She says.
I sigh and look at Colt. He has the same confused look on his face that I'm sure I just did.
"You smelled it, too?" I ask, just below a whisper so only he can hear me.
He nods, "Tropical slushy with whipped cream."
I crinkle my nose at him. "Ew, no. I smelled spicy Chai and honey." I respond.
His brow furrows more. "Blaze wants us to find it?" He questions.
I nod. "Ezra, too. Says it's important."
He nods back in confirmation. "How will we track it if it's gone now? And why did we scent different things?" He ponders.
I bolt up right in my seat and stare at him wide-eyed. "Our mates are here!" I whisper-yell at him, causing his eyes to go wide as saucers.
"Move your ass then!" He whispers-yells back as he gets up.
We both get up as casually as we can, so we don't draw any more attention to ourselves and toss our tash in the garbage. Then we make our way back to our bikes. Both of us are scenting the air, trying to catch the scents again.
Sighing in disappointment, I sling my leg over my bike and just sit there. I watch Colt do the same.
"Maybe we can find them if we cruise around the town?" I ask with uncertainty.
Colt looks up at me for a moment, then drops his head. "I don't know." He states, defeated.
I nod and turn the key on my bike. I get nothing. Not even a ticking. I furrow my brow in confusion and anger.
"f**k!" I exclaim as I slam my palm on the tank.
I quickly scan our surroundings to try and find a hardware store or something that would have the tools I need to fix my baby. Though she shouldn't be having any problems, not with the way I care for her.
Across from the lot we parked next to, I notice a sign that says 'HQ mechanic shop'.
"There's a shop over there. Let's head over and see if I can borrow a few tools to fix my baby." I state as I get off my bike.
Colt just nods as he does the same. Though he's hung his head low and his shoulders are hunched. I know how he feels. I want to find my mate, too. As soon as possible.
We weave our way through the cars parked in the lot, but about two-thirds of the way across, I freeze, causing Colt to bump into me. I stumble forward a couple of steps before he grabs my arm to stabilize me.
"She's here." I state, staring ahead of me.
Colt stiffens as he inhales deeply, then let's out a low rumble. "So is mine." He states.
