The Map of Stars

Chapter 19 – The Map of Stars Richard’s Point of View The early light broke through the tall windows of the strategy room, gold shafts cutting across the polished wood floor like swords. But it wasn’t light that filled the room—it was weight. The weight of what Anna had dreamed. Of what she’d become. And of what might be coming next. Richard stood at the head of the long table, his Beta Johnny on his right, Gamma Charlie beside him, both standing tall despite their battle injuries. Candace and Lacy sat together, eyes alert, hands resting near maps and scrolls that had been retrieved from the pack archives at dawn. And at his left, Anna. His Luna. His mate. His mystery. She hadn’t said much since waking from the dream. But he could feel the storm building behind her eyes. “She saw a symbol,” Richard said, breaking the silence. “A crescent moon, a crown, and three falling stars. It came directly from the Moon Goddess.” Candace leaned forward. “Three stars—do you think she means people?” “That’s what the Goddess said.” Anna’s voice was soft, but it filled the room like thunder. “I’m not whole. Parts of me were sealed. There are others like me—or connected to me. We have to find them before the cloaked one does.” Lacy glanced at the scroll in front of her. “This might help.” She unrolled it slowly, revealing an ancient map—one unlike anything Richard had seen before. It wasn’t a territory chart. It was celestial. A star map. And there, etched in the lower corner, was the same symbol Anna had described. “How old is this?” Charlie asked. “No idea,” Lacy replied. “It was hidden in the stone floor beneath the archives. Candace and I found it just this morning.” Anna leaned over the parchment. Her finger hovered above a cluster of stars marked in silver ink. “They’re not just stars,” she murmured. “They’re locations. Look—this one matches the ridge where we found that crescent-shaped clearing last moon cycle.” Richard’s jaw tightened. “We ride at nightfall. I want our fastest scouts heading to these locations—quietly. No signals. No risks.” Candace narrowed her eyes. “If they’re like Anna, they might not even know they’re different.” “Or they might be waiting,” Johnny added. “Hiding. Like she was.” --- The meeting adjourned, and the room slowly emptied, leaving only Richard and Anna. She stood with her hands pressed to the edge of the table, head bowed. He came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, lowering his mouth to the curve of her neck. “You were perfect in there,” he whispered. “I don’t feel perfect,” she admitted. “I feel like I’m unraveling.” “You’re evolving,” he said. “And you’re not alone.” She turned in his arms, eyes searching his. “What if I become something else? What if I’m not the girl you marked?” “You think the Moon Goddess didn’t already know who you’d become?” Richard’s voice dropped to a murmur. “She sent you to me. My light. My Luna.” His lips brushed hers, soft at first—reassuring. Then need surged between them like a tide. She pressed into him, hands gripping the back of his neck, pulling him deeper into the kiss. All her fears, her power, her fire—he felt it in every touch. He guided her to the nearby couch, lips never leaving hers. She straddled his lap, grounding herself in his warmth, her fingers tangled in his dark hair. They clung to each other, breathless, desperate to feel something that made sense in a world unraveling beneath them. When they finally stilled, her head rested on his shoulder, heartbeat against heartbeat. “I don’t know what’s coming,” she whispered. “Then we face it together,” he said, pressing a kiss to her temple. --- That night, beneath the cover of clouds, the first search party rode out. Anna stood beside Richard at the northern gate, cloaked in silver, the glow of her mark hidden beneath gloves. The wind carried the scent of pine and frost—and something else. Change. “Be careful,” she told the scouts. They nodded in silent respect, and vanished into the trees. As the gates closed behind them, Anna looked to the stars. Three falling lights streaked across the sky in a perfect arc. Her breath caught. Richard followed her gaze. “What is it?” “They’ve awakened,” she said softly. “They’re calling to me.” His hand slipped into hers. “Then we find them,” he promised. “Before he does.”
