Chapter 14
The city above them was exploding into chaos.
Soldiers ran through the streets shouting orders. Bells screamed from every tower. Torches burned like small fires across rooftops as the entire capital of Vareth woke to the same terrifying rumor.
The Serpent Queen had escaped.
And every hunter in the kingdom was now chasing her.
But beneath the streets…
The world was different.
Quiet.
Old.
And waiting.
Kael dragged a rusted iron grate aside in a narrow alley behind the butcher’s market. The metal shrieked against the stone like something dying slowly.
Selene stared down into the black hole beneath the street.
Cold air crawled out of it.
Wet.
Rotten.
“Please tell me that’s not where we’re going,” she muttered.
Kael had already jumped down.
His boots landed softly in the darkness below.
He looked up at her.
“It’s exactly where we’re going.”
Selene looked back toward the street behind them. She could hear soldiers shouting only a few blocks away.
More hunters.
More footsteps.
More people searching for her.
She sighed.
“I hate tonight.”
The serpent coiled tighter around her wrist.
“You will hate many nights before this story ends.”
Selene glared down at it.
“You’re very encouraging.”
Then she jumped.
The drop wasn’t far—only ten feet—but the landing still jarred her bones. Her boots splashed into shallow water that smelled like old iron and damp earth.
Kael pushed the grate back into place above them.
Instant darkness swallowed the tunnel.
Selene blinked.
“I can’t see anything.”
Kael lit a small oil lamp from his belt.
The weak flame revealed the underground passage stretching away into the distance.
Ancient stone walls.
Water trickling slowly along the floor.
Roots from the city trees hanging down through cracks in the ceiling.
Selene wrinkled her nose.
“This place smells like something died.”
Kael started walking.
“Many things probably have.”
Selene followed reluctantly.
The serpent lifted its head and tasted the air.
“These tunnels are older than the kingdom.”
Selene frowned.
“You’ve been here before?”
Kael nodded.
“Years ago.”
“Breaking into the palace again?”
Kael smirked faintly.
“Something like that.”
They moved deeper into the tunnel.
The sound of the city above slowly faded, replaced by dripping water and the quiet echo of their footsteps.
Selene’s shoulder throbbed where the poisoned dart had struck her earlier.
The black veins across her arms had spread farther now, crawling faintly along her collarbone.
She touched them carefully.
“They’re still growing.”
The serpent answered calmly.
“The poison forced the blood awake.”
Selene glanced at Kael.
“You could have warned me about that.”
Kael shrugged.
“I didn’t know the hunter would use serpent-tracking venom.”
Selene blinked.
“That’s a thing?”
“Yes.”
“Of course it is.”
They reached a crossroads in the tunnel.
Three dark paths stretching away in different directions.
Kael stopped.
Selene leaned against the wall.
“Please tell me you remember which way.”
Kael studied the tunnels.
“Mostly.”
Selene groaned.
“That’s not comforting.”
The serpent slid down Selene’s arm and touched the stone floor.
Its tongue flicked slowly.
Then it turned toward the left tunnel.
“That way.”
Kael raised an eyebrow.
“You trust it?”
Selene shrugged.
“At this point? Yes.”
They followed the left tunnel.
After several minutes the passage widened into a large underground chamber.
Selene stopped walking.
The room was enormous.
Stone pillars held up the ceiling like the bones of some buried giant. Old carvings covered the walls, half hidden beneath moss and dripping water.
Selene stepped closer to one of the carvings.
A woman stood in the stone relief.
Tall.
Powerful.
Her hair flowing like fire around her shoulders.
And around her body…
Serpents.
Dozens of them.
Selene’s breath caught.
“That’s…”
The serpent lifted its head proudly.
“The first queen.”
Selene traced the edge of the carving with her fingers.
“She ruled Vareth?”
Kael shook his head.
“No.”
Selene looked back at him.
“She ruled everything.”
Selene blinked.
“Everything?”
Kael nodded toward the carvings stretching across the walls.
Images of armies kneeling.
Kings offering crowns.
Cities burning.
Selene stepped back slowly.
“This prophecy isn’t about a kingdom.”
The serpent’s voice lowered.
“No.”
Selene felt cold crawl through her veins.
“It’s about the world.”
A sound echoed through the tunnels behind them.
Bootsteps.
Selene’s head snapped around.
“Tell me that’s not what I think it is.”
Kael extinguished the lamp instantly.
Darkness swallowed the chamber.
But the footsteps kept coming.
More than one person.
More than two.
Hunters.
Selene whispered.
“How did they find us?”
The serpent’s golden eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.
“The venom.”
Selene clenched her fists.
“That hunter marked me.”
Kael’s voice came quietly beside her.
“Which means they know exactly where we are.”
The footsteps grew louder.
Closer.
A torch flared at the end of the tunnel.
Then another.
Three hunters stepped into the chamber.
Then five.
Then more.
Selene’s stomach dropped.
Kael counted them quickly.
“Twelve.”
Selene whispered.
“That’s a lot.”
The serpent lifted its head slowly.
“Not for a queen.”
Selene swallowed.
“I’m still getting used to that title.”
The hunters spread out across the chamber.
One of them laughed softly.
“Well well.”
It was Darius.
His green eyes gleamed in the torchlight.
“I told you the venom would work.”
Selene stared at him.
“You really don’t know when to stop.”
Darius smiled wider.
“Oh I do.”
He drew his blade.
“Right after I collect the bounty.”
Kael stepped forward slightly.
His sword came free with a quiet whisper of steel.
Selene looked at the hunters surrounding them.
Then at the carvings of the ancient queen on the walls.
Her veins burned hotter.
The serpent whispered.
“Now you must fight.”
Selene took a slow breath.
The hunters moved closer.
Kael glanced at her.
“You ready?”
Selene looked down at her glowing veins.
Then back at the men who wanted her dead.
A strange calm settled over her.
“No.”
She raised her hand slowly.
The air in the chamber began to tremble.
“But I’m learning.”
And for the first time since the prophecy began—
The Serpent Queen stopped running.
