Zahra ran quietly up the stairs to Karim’s apartment, but once inside she hesitated. Where could she leave the letter without the housekeeper finding it? She walked across to Karim’s freshly made bed. The housekeepers wouldn’t come in here again today, she thought as she slipped the envelope under Karim’s pillow. Back on the landing, she paused. How can I do this to him? He’s a caring, considerate man. He gave me $200 after the US embassy raid when he thought I was in danger. He’s offered to take me and Ahmad with him to the States. He wants to marry me. But everything had changed.
